Bisons goalies earn shutout victory over Horns
February 3rd, 2008 1:00am
LETHBRIDGE - The University of Lethbridge Pronghorns dropped their second straight game to the University of Manitoba Bisons on Saturday night.  The Bisons shutout the Horns 4-0 with goalies Jenna Illchuk (Lockport, MB, 1st) and Dana Hoogsteen (Kakabeka Falls,ON, 5th) splitting time between the pipes to split the shutout.

Manitoba captain Leanne Kisil (Winnipeg, MB, 4th) opened the scoring near the five minute mark of the opening frame by collecting a rebound in front of the net and putting it past a sprawled out Kailey McMaster (Kenora, ON, 3rd).  The Bisons would add to their lead shortly after courtesy of a Stephanie Messner (Winnipeg, MB, 5th) backhand in front of the net.  The Bisons continued their assault on McMaster less than two minutes later as Meghan Ross (Murillo, ON, 2nd) fought off a Horns defender on the way to the front of the net and slipped a backhander through the legs of the Horns goalkeeper.  Heading into the first intermission the Bisons held a commanding 14-6 shots advantage over the Pronghorns.

There was no scoring to report in the second period as Manitoba continued to hold the advantage on the shots on goal.  The Bisons put nine shots on McMaster and the tandem of Illchuk and Hoogsteen stopped four Pronghorn shots.

Manitoba would return one last time to the scoresheet early in the third period when Amy Coates (Carman, MB, 2nd) found the puck on the doorstep in a scramble in front of McMaster and buried the puck into the empty part of the net.  The Horns managed some offense on the powerplay late in the game but still could not light the lamp despite outshooting Manitoba by a 14-4 margin in the period.  The Bisons held the final shots advantage 27-24.

The loss drops the Horns to 3-17-2 while the Bisons improve to 17-3-2.  This was the Pronghorns regular season finale but they return to Nicholas Sheran Arena on February 19 to tangle the Chinese National team.
