EDMONTON - Cami Wooster (Salvador, SK, 3rd) scored at 8:53 in the third overtime period, on a 5-on-3 powerplay, as the University of Alberta Pandas (21-3 Canada West, 28-4 overall) rallied for an improbable comeback defeating Manitoba (18-4-2 Conference, 20-8 Overall) 4-3 Saturday night in Edmonton in Game Two of the Canada West Final.

With the victory, the two-time defending National Champions complete a two-game sweep of their rivals from Winnipeg and claim their seventh consecutive Conference Championship.

The #2 ranked Pandas rallied from a 3-0 deficit with just over 13 minutes left in the third period, with Miranda Miller (Strome, AB, 4th) scoring the game-tying goal with just :16 left in regulation.

“The comeback was an amazing feat. We showed that we have tremendous perseverance and character,” said Alberta Head Coach Howie Draper after the game.

“When you get down by three goals, it is not uncommon to get a wave of despair on the bench, but I didn’t get that feeling from our team tonight,” Draper added.

Bisons Head Coach Jon Rempel made no excuses for his team’s loss.“We were up 3-0 with 13 minutes left in the third, that is a game you have to close out,” said Rempel after the game.

The Pandas started the comeback while shorthanded. Lindsay Robinson (Edmonton, 4th) broke free from center on a breakaway and beat Stacey Corfield (Winnipeg, MB) with a beautiful backhand-forehand deke to make it a 3-1 game at 6:53 of the third.

Alberta made it one-goal game on the powerplay, as Alanna Donahue (Grand Cache, AB, 5th) banged home a lose puck to make the score 3-2 at 16:08.

After the Pandas killed off an Andrea Boras (Calgary, AB, 1st) penalty in the final four minutes of the third, Canada West MVP Jennifer Newton (Norglenworld, AB, 4th) led one last desperate rush up the ice in the final 25 seconds, which Miller capped off banking the puck in off the post with just 16 seconds left.
After a scoreless first overtime period, Alberta thought they may have won the game at 6:08 of the second overtime but Leah Copeland’s (Calgary, AB, 2nd) shot hit the cross bar and dropped on the line behind Corfield, but did not go into the net.

Finally in the third overtime period, Alberta was given a two-man powerplay for 54 seconds, and the Pandas made the most of it as Wooster poked home a loose puck to give Alberta the 4-3 victory and the series sweep.

“I feel for the position that Manitoba was in trying to kill off a 5-on-3, but I felt the calls were justified. Especially based upon the calls all night,” said Draper after a game that saw Manitoba get three 5-on-3 opportunities in the second period alone.

After being shutout in three consecutive games by Alberta in Conference finals over the last two seasons; the ‘Herd came out of the gate quickly.

Meghan Ross (Murillo, ON, 2nd) converted a rebound off a shot from Bisons captain Leanne Kisil (Winnipeg, MB, 4th) to give Manitoba a 1-0 lead just 58 seconds into the first period. Manitoba made it 2-0 at 5:15 of the second as Tammy Brade (Roblin, MB, 2nd) scored on the powerplay. Becca King (Thunder Bay, ON, 2nd) gave the Bisons a 3-0 lead at 5:43 of the third before the Pandas started their comeback.

Alberta outshot Manitoba 47-34 on the night, with Corfield making 43 saves for the Bisons, and Dana Vinge (Edmonton, 2nd) stopping 31 shots for the Pandas. The Bisons were 1-for-10 on the powerplay and Alberta finished 2-for-11.

With the victory the Pandas have now swept Manitoba in four straight Canada West Finals. Both teams had already earned a berth to the 2008 Nationals that will be held in Ottawa March 7th to 10th.
