Bison women's soccer extends win streak to three games with win over Regina
September 13th, 2008 6:00pm
On Saturday, September 13 at University Stadium (University of Manitoba campus) in front a good contingent of loud supporters, the Manitoba Bisons women’s soccer team extended their unbeaten streak to three games with a 1-0 victory over the Regina Cougars.

The Bisons are atop the Canada West conference with a perfect 3-0-0 record while the Cougars suffer their first loss of the young 2008 campaign and drop to 0-1-2.

Before even some of the fans could get to the seat, the Herd notched the only goal of the game. Bisons’ forward Caley Miskimmin was sent a pass by midfielder Stephanie Rurak and she raced down the sidelines and beat her defender. She fired a low shot to the right hand side that evaded last week’s Canada West Female Athlete of the Week goaltender Michelle Anderson and Manitoba had the early lead.

There was a back-and-forth flow from both teams as the weather was decent with not too much wind. Manitoba continued to press for a second goal in the first half but was thwarted by Anderson. The Bisons earned four corner kicks in the first 45 minutes and at half, Manitoba lead 1-0.

In the second half, Regina turned on the pressure as they made five substitutions in trying to find a way to pot the equalizer. Regina had a couple of shots but nothing materialized into a goal and at the end of the game, the Bisons took game one of the weekend series between the two teams.

Anderson was busy as she made 11 saves while goalie Ashley Forbes earned her first solo shutout of the season (has also one shared with keeper Laura Harrison). Manitoba had ten corner kicks in the game while Regina had four fouls and the Bisons had six fouls. Miskimmin, along with the game-winner, had five shots on goal.

Both teams meet again at University Stadium on Sunday, September 14 at noon (12 p.m. CT). Manitoba looks to extend their unbeaten streak to four games (which would equal a team high) while Regina seeks their first victory in the 2008 season.
