September 14th, 2008 2:00pm
On Sunday, September 14 at University Stadium (University of Manitoba campus), the Manitoba Bisons women’s soccer team continued their winning ways as they have a perfect 4-0-0 record after a 2-1 home victory over the Regina Cougars. With the loss, Regina is now 0-2-2 in 2008.
The #6 ranked Bisons are atop the Canada West conference with 12 points and have tied a team record with their fourth consecutive victory. During the four matches, the Herd has scored a conference high 11 goals and given up only two (for a conference high +9 scoring differential).
Bison women’s soccer head coach Walt McKee said, “We are pleased with the result over the weekend but can not get complacent as it is early and there is still a long season ahead. Regina played us tough and we responded with a team effort to secure the valuable full three points today.” With top Bisons player Desiree Scott not available for today’s match, Manitoba looked to others to fill the void. Player of the Game for Manitoba, defender Carrie Nash, was a force all game and added an assist on the game-winner scored by Karli Colpitts at the end of the first half. This was Colpitts sixth marker of the season, highest total in Canada West so far this season. Manitoba first tally was when forward Caley Miskimmin had a strong run down the right hand side and crossed over into the box where Lianna Bestvater notched her first goal of the season at the 14 minute mark. Regina was outshot in the first half but bounced back with a strong second half as they pushed the play throughout and were rewarded with their second goal of the season when Stecey Wilson headed in a perfectly placed corner kick by Tegan Koroluk past Bisons’ goalkeeper Ashley Forbes. The goal was scored at 64:26 of the match and ended Forbes shutout streak at 286:48 over the last three plus games. The visitors continued to mount attacks at Forbes for the remainder of the match, but could not find the equalizer, and the Herd came away with a 2-1 home win. Manitoba now ventures away from the friendly confines of University Stadium for the first time in the 2008 season and travels to play the Saskatchewan Huskies on Saturday, September 20 at 12 p.m. MT and then the Alberta Pandas on Sunday, September 21 at 12 p.m. MT. Regina will start next week at Alberta on Saturday, September 20 at 12 p.m. MT and then play at Saskatchewan on Sunday, September 21 at 12 p.m. MT.
