The No. 4 ranked University of Manitoba Bisons women’s soccer team defeated the University of Saskatchewan Huskies 5-1 Saturday in a windy afternoon at Griffiths Stadium.

The Bisons women looked sharp off the get-go as solid offensive play kept the ball in Saskatchewan’s side of the field for most of the first half. The Bisons jumped to a 2-0 lead early in the match after mid-fielder Desiree Scott and forward Caley Miskimmin each put the ball past Huskies keeper Kailee Marland.

The Dogs rallied after trailing early to come within one of the Bisons. Kaitlyn Johnson booted a hard shot past the Manitoba keeper after a nice crossing pass from Jamie LeMay set her up. But, the Huskies couldn’t hang on to the momentum as Monitoba’s third goal was scored late in the first half by Katherine Reichardt.

The second half started with Huskies pushing the ball into Manitoba territory. After LeMay missed on two early chances for the Dogs, the Bisons took advantage of a misplay by Marland with Miskimmin putting it in the net for her second goal of the game.

The Huskies continued to work hard as Elizabeth Hudon put the pressure on the Bisons defense, but it was too little too late as Manitoba’s fifth goal scored by Scott sealed the game and a 5-1 victory for Bisons.

Saskatchewan, now 1-3-1, face a tough Regina Cougars team Sunday at Griffiths Stadium while the Bisons, now 5-0-0, head to Edmonton to take on the University of Alberta Pandas.
