January 12- Playing in their first conference game in 48 days, the #1 ranked University of Manitoba Bisons women’s volleyball team (10-1) defeated the #6 Trinity Western Spartans (8-3) on Saturday afternoon at Investors Group Athletic Centre (25-21, 25-16, 25-23).

The Bisons, ranked #1 by CIS since the beginning of the season, now have an overall record of 33-1, including tournament play.

The first set teeter-tottered back and forth as Trinity Western held a slim lead halfway through the set, attacking the net hard and forcing the Bisons into a few uncharacteristic mistakes.  The Herd regained its form however, powered by top hitters Sarah Morrisette, Amy Matthews and Ashley Voth.  The Bisons dominated the final points of the first set, taking it 25-21.

The Bisons picked up where they left off in the first set, taking the first three points of the second set and never looking back.  The offense seemed to really find its stride as the Spartans were overwhelmed by a balanced attack and some diverse looks.

“We started to put (Trinity Western) in some uncomfortable situations and really started to settle into a bit of a groove,” said U of M head coach Ken Bentley.

The third frame was deadlocked on five separate occasions as Trinity Western confused the Herd by diversifying their hitting and assault.  The Bisons took the key points when it mattered led by a determined and poised aerial assault.  The Bisons took the set 25-23, putting an opening stamp on the weekend series.

“This is a big series for both teams, as we are all fighting for top spot in the Canada West standings,” said Bentley. “We played well and showed great experience and poise.”

Individually, Ashley Voth was dominating, leading with nine kills and four blocks.  Sarah Morrisette had a characteristically good game at the net, finishing with 8 kills on the offensive side and 7 digs on defense.  Katie Davidson was also impressive in a gritty relief role, finishing with four assists.

Manitoba will host Trinity Western tomorrow, Sunday, January 13, in the second match of the weekend series at a special start time, noon, at Investors Group Athletic Centre.
