Born in Winnipeg, Ken Bentley graduated from Murdoch MacKay Collegiate and completed his post secondary studies at the University of Manitoba.
As of the 2012-13 season, this is his 27th season as the Head Coach of the University of Manitoba Women’s Volleyball Program, Bentley continues to produce results at the highest level in Canada in terms of athlete development and team performance.
He is the only coach to have qualified for 16 consecutive CIS National Championships. During those 16 years, the Bison Women won five National Championships (1990, ’91, ’92, ’01, ’02), three silver medals (1987, ’98, 2000), four bronze medals, (1993, ’94, ’95, ’99), one fourth place finish (1997), and three fifth place finishes (1988, ’89, ’96).
Bentley has coached age class volleyball with equal success, winning his first National Championship with the Prairie Blue Senior ‘AA’ team 1984, at the age of 21. Since that time, he has gone to win six more National Championships from the 16 yr to 20 yr old age classes. His resume also includes a gold medal at the 1987 Canada Games in Sydney, N.S.
This brings Bentley to a very impressive total of 14 National Championship wins at every level in Canadian volleyball.
Bentley has won Canada West Coach of the Year honours in back-to-back seasons of 2006-07 and 2007-08 and was selected CIS Coach of the Year in 1991-92 and 2006-07 season along with several of coaching honours in the defunct Great Plains league. In addition, he was honoured with a University of Manitoba's annual Outreach Award in 2009.
Bentley has also been an assistant coach with the Women’s National Team on several occasions over the past twenty years, culminating with being named as an assistant coach for the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta.
At the end of the 2012-13 Canada West regular season (Feb. 9/13), Ken Bentley’s overall won/loss University of Manitoba record stood at 955 wins and 338 losses (73.9% winning percentage).
