Facility Renovations

X Lot Closure

Effective October 9, 2012, X and T lot will be closed, in preparation for the start of the construction for the Active Living Centre. This includes the accessible and meter parking along the east side in X lot. However, the Pay & Display lot (in between X and T lot) will remain open until further notice. The lot will be closed when the construction team is ready to move in.

Please note the main entrance of Frank Kennedy leading out to X lot will also remain open until further notice.

Locker Rooms

The time has finally arrived! Frank Kennedy’s newly renovated locker rooms are officially open as of Monday, September 10th, 2012! At this time the primary renovations have been completed however some smaller scale work will continue to be done during afterhours to ensure minimal disruptions. Regular locker sales will commence at this time.

Improvements to the locker rooms include:

  • Expansion of the women's room to accommodate more lockers
  • New plastic lockers and aluminum benches in both men's and women's rooms
  • New epoxy flooring
  • New counters and mirror complete with electrical outlets, and new towel hooks throughout both locker rooms
  • New barrier-free water fountains and bottle fillers
  • New emergency red phones
  • Addition of more privacy showers in the women's room
  • Upgrades to the existing shower/washroom facilities in both rooms including new toilets, sinks, countertops, and shower heads
  • Barrier-free access improvements
  • Upgrades to HVAC
  • New paint throughout both rooms

The new wheelchair lift and revised ramp to the Joyce Fromson Pool is expected to be completed within a few weeks.

Thank you Members!

Recreation Services is excited to announce that it will be giving away 20 eight-month memberships during the locker room closure period! Our Member Appreciation Give-Away is our way of saying “thank you” to all members who kept their membership active during this hectic and inconvenient time.

Any member who has/had an active membership during the locker room closure period of April 30 to August 31 has automatically been entered into the draw. No action is required on behalf of any member to qualify.

Draws for the memberships will take place at the end of May, June, July and August of this year with five memberships being given away in each of the four months. All winners will be announced on our website and contacted by phone. Please note that a member may not win a monthly prize in both our Locker Room Renovation Contest and our Member Appreciation Give-Away. Prize winners will be drawn first from our Locker Room Renovation Contest and then from our Member Appreciation Give-Away.

UPDATE (April 30, 2012)

The men’s and women’s locker rooms in the Frank Kennedy Centre are now officially closed for renovations. The locker rooms will remain closed until the renovation is completed in late August to early September. Although our locker rooms are closed, Recreation Services will remain fully operational during the renovation project. Please find below some information on available change rooms/washrooms and day lockers during the closure:

1) Where can you change/shower during the locker room closure?

i.   Community Change Room - located on the second floor of the Joyce Fromson Pool, the Community Change Room is suitable for all genders and includes showers, rest and day use locker facilities.  (Please follow the “orange” footprints to the Community Change Room.)

ii. Second Floor Women’s Change Room - located again on the second floor of the Joyce Fromson Pool, the women’s change room includes showers, rest and day use locker facilities.  (Please follow the “pink” footprints to the Women’s Change Room)i

ii. Max Bell Centre Men’s and Women’s Locker Rooms - located in the Max Bell Centre, both the men’s and women’s locker rooms include shower, rest and day locker facilities.  (Please follow the “green” foot prints to the Max Bell Centre.)

*All alternative change rooms will follow the same hours of operation as the Frank Kennedy Centre. 

2) Where are the alternative rest rooms?

i. Community Change Room - all genders (follow “orange” footprints to room)

ii. Second Floor Women’s Change Room - women only (follow “pink” footprints to room)

iii. Max Bell Women’s Locker Room - women only (follow “green” footprints to room)

iv. Max Bell Men’s Locker Room - men only (follow “green” footprints to room)

v. Extended Education Men’s and Women’s Public Washrooms (follow “blue” footprints to room)

vi. Third Floor Frank Kennedy Men’s and Women’s Public Washrooms (follow “blue” footprints to room)


3) Where can I store my belonging if the locker rooms are now closed?

If you do not find enough locker space in any of the three alternative change rooms, we will be adding temporary day use lockers in the basement (Gritty Grotto) and the second and third floors of the Frank Kennedy Centre over the next few days.  Please help yourself to a day locker but please remove your belongings at the end of your work-out as all day use lockers will be emptied at the end of the day.  You must provide your own lock for day use lockers or you can rent one at the customer service desk for $1.

If you had a locker membership and you were unable to clear your rental locker by the April 8 deadline, please visit our customer service desk, room 145 in the Frank Kennedy Centre, to claim your locker contents.

Attention Recreation Services Member:

We are excited to announce that our men’s and women’s locker rooms in the Frank Kennedy Centre (Fort Gary Campus) will be undergoing a major renovation as part of the new Active Living Centre project. Both rooms are scheduled for a complete closure starting April 23 with a tentative re-open date in late August to early September of 2012. The renovation schedule includes the following:

  • Expansion of the women’s room to accommodate more lockers
  • The addition of more privacy showers in the women’s room
  • New lockers in both men’s and women’s rooms
  • New benches in both men’s and women’s rooms
  • A complete renovation of the existing rest/shower facilities in both rooms including new toilets, sinks, counter tops, and shower heads
  • New paint throughout both rooms

While we are excited about this announcement we appreciate that this process will no doubt inconvenience many of our members who use these spaces especially those with locker service. A compensation plan has been put into place to address those members with active locker service. As part of the compensation plan we are excited to announce that we will be running a locker renovation contest where we will be giving away some fantastic prizes throughout the closure period including Bison Recreation Services memberships & programs, Apple iPods and a grand prize of an Apple iPad 2. Although we are closing our locker rooms, we will be making available temporary day use lockers as well providing three alternative change/shower/rest facilities for member use to minimize disruption during the closure period. For more information on these spaces, please read the FAQ document.
