Membership Information

Bison Sport and Active Living is home to a wide range of excellent facilities for learning, teaching, recreation and sport. With over 34.5 acres of green space and more than 350,000 square feet devoted to recreational pursuits, Bison Sport and Active Living has it all. Our facilities are open to students, U of M staff, U of M alumni and the community. A membership or day pass is valid for both the Fort Garry and Bannatyne Campus facilities. PLEASE NOTE: There is limited access to some facilities at various times. Please call for current availability of space or check out the Rec Use Schedule in the left menu.

Automated External Defibrillators are available in Frank Kennedy Centre (across from the Customer Service Desk), Max Bell Centre (right in front of the Customer Service Desk) and in Investor's Group Athletic Centre (in the center of the south wall). Please be sure to alert a staff member to activate emergency medical services (555 from a university phone or #555 from a cell phone) before using an AED.

**Please note that personal training is prohibited (in Frank Kennedy, Max Bell, IGAC and Joe Doupe) by any individual(s) not employed as a Bison Recreation Services Certified Personal Trainer.

Student Forever Membership

Are you getting ready to graduate? Heading out into the real world? Worried about getting a job and paying bills? Let Bison Recreation Services help alleviate some of your stress. Purchase or renew your student recreation facility membership before you graduate or leave school and you will continue to receive the student rate for membership as along as you do not let it expire.

Please Note: We require a $10 deposit for locker/towel service. Locker and towel service must be purchased for the entire length of membership. U of M staff may be eligible for membership, locker and towel service payments through Payroll Deduction. To accommodate high demand, lockers MUST be renewed on or before your expiry date. Failure to renew will result in loss of you locker. Personal items must also be removed upon completion of your rental term. We are not responsible for lost, stolen or removed articles.

Day-Use Locker Service

Users are welcome to use our free day-use lockers when visiting our facilities. Please provide personal lock. Please do not leave day-use lockers unlocked. Daily rental locks are available from the Customer Service Desk. Locks left on day-use lockers will be cut off daily and personal items removed. We are not responsible for lost, stolen or removed articles.

Payroll Deduction:

Payroll Deduction for membership, locker and towel service is available to U of M employees who are permanent, permanent part-time, grant-funded or reduced appointment staff. Full-time HSC, CCMB, DSM employees are also eligible for payroll deduction. Part-time, casual staff, with variable hours are not eligible.

Membership Policies

  • Photo ID is required for purchase of a membership or Day Pass.
  • A health screening questionnaire must be completed by all customers purchasing a membership or Day Pass.
  • Payroll Deduction for membership is available to University of Manitoba employees who are permanent, permanent part-time, grant-funded or reduced appointment staff. Full-time Health Sciences Centre, CancerCare and Diagnostic Services of Manitoba employees are also eligible for payroll deduction. Part-time casual staff with variable hours are not eligible.
  • Dependent memberships are available to those children 14 years of age and under, whose parent / guardian is a member and accompanies the dependant at all times.
  • Spousal and Dependent memberships can only be purchased through an existing member and must expire simultaneously with the primary member.

Membership Access

In order to access the facilities, you must either be a member or purchase a Day Pass. Abuse of membership privileges (i.e. sharing membership card with others) will result in loss of membership without refund.

Forgot your card?

In order to ensure a safe, secure environment for our patrons and their belongings and if a current picture of you is not in our database, you will be required to produce another form of picture ID if you do not have your membership card.

  • 1 Month Membership: 1 Free Access
  • 4 Month Membership: 3 Free Access
  • 8 Month Membership: 4 Free Access
  • 12 Month Membership: 6 Free Access

After reaching the maximum number of opportunities to gain access without your card, members have 3 choices;

  • pay a $2 access fee;
  • choose not to access the facility; or
  • return with valid card.

Membership Freeze Policy

A customer may "freeze" their membership for 30, 60 or 90 days for a non-refundable $12 per month fee. Membership freeze will only apply to 12 month membership purchases and can be used once per 12 month membership.

Membership Refund Policy

All approved membership refunds will be pro-rated minus a $15 admin fee.

STUDENT MEMBERSHIPS:

Refunds on U of M student memberships will be granted when a fee statement showing that they have withdrawn from studies at the U of M or a valid medical certificate is presented.

STAFF MEMBERSHIPS:

Refunds on staff memberships will be provided when the employee displays a Record of Employment indicating that they are no longer employed by the U of M or a valid medical certificate is presented.

UNIVERSITY OF MANITOBA EMPLOYEE PAYROLL DEDUCTION REFUND POLICY

Medical: Once a valid medical certificate from a physician is presented, payroll deductions and membership will be inactivated. No refunds will be issued.

No longer Employed: When a staff member leaves employment the University of Manitoba will deduct the outstanding amount owing for membership fees from payroll entitlements. Once a Record of Employment from the U of M is presented the employee will be eligible for a pro-rated refund. A $15 administration fee will apply.

GENERAL MEMBERSHIP:

Refunds on all other membership categories will be provided only when a valid medical certificate is presented.
