Funding Opportunities
Opportunities for Graduate Assistantships
New students who register as full-time students in the Master of Science or Master of Arts degree program in the Faculty of Kinesiology & Recreation Management with a September start date may be eligible for graduate research assistantships (GRA).

University of Manitoba Graduate Fellowship (UMGF) ($12,000)

Manitoba Graduate Scholarship (MGS) ($15,000)
MGS awards will be determined in July of each year. Information on the MGS can be found at http://umanitoba.ca/faculties/graduate_studies/funding/

NSERC PGS Competition  ($17,500.00)
Applications are available on the web at http://www.nserc.ca/ in an online version. Departmental deadline for receipt of applications for reviewing purposes only is usually early October.

SSHRC CGS Master's & Doctoral Competition ($17,500.00)
Applications are available on the web at http://www.sshrc.ca/ in an online version. Departmental deadline for receipt of applications for ranking is usually late October.

CIHR Canada Graduate Scholarship - Master's Awards ($17,500.00)
Students must have a minimum GPA of 3.75 in each of the last two full years of study
Applications are available on the web at http://www.cihr.ca/
Departmental Deadline for applications for ranking is usually early December.

Manitoba Health Research Council ($17,850)
The deadline is February 1 of each year. Applications are available online at http://www.mhrc.mb.ca/

In this Faculty:

Ruth Asper Scholarship in Physical Education and Kinesiology 

Award: 1 award of approximately $6,000 each

Eligibility: A graduate student who:

  • A graduate student who is enrolling as a full-time student in the Master of Science (Kinesiology and Recreation) or the Master of Arts (Kinesiology and Recreation) program in the Faculty of Kinesiology and Recreation Management at the University of Manitoba.
  • As an entering student, has achieved a minimum grade point average of 3.5 in the most recent 60 credit hours completed in their undergraduate program.
  • Demonstrates a focus on the physical and/or psycho-social aspects of fitness and physical activity through research or thesis topic.

Coca Cola Bottling Scholarship

Award: $500.00

Eligibility: A graduate student who:

  • is enrolled as a full-time student in the Master of Science or the Master of Arts program in the Faculty of Kinesiology and Recreation Management at the University of Manitoba who best combines academic achievement and athletic ability
  • has a minimum GPA of 3.2 in the last two full years of study (minimum of 24 credit hours per year in a Bachelor degree and 6 credit hours per year in a Master’s program)

Health, Leisure and Human Performance Research Institute Travel Award

Award: 4 awards of $500.00 each

Eligibility: Students must be enrolled in the Master of Science or the Master of Arts program in the Faculty of Kinesiology and Recreation Management - or those students who have graduated within the past year. The applicant must be presenting a paper at a conference based on research conducted while a student in the faculty. Maximum award: $500.00 per person, up to a maximum of 4 awarded annually.

Graduate Student Funding Opportunities

Amounts:

  • $500 for conference travel in North America
  • $750 for international conference travel
  • $500 maximum for international students who require a visa to attend a conference in a country that does not require Canadian students to hold a visa (available on a trial basis).
