• To create an environment which promotes and supports research in health, leisure behaviour and human performance.
• To conduct original scholarship and basic and applied research of the highest quality in the areas of human movement and leisure behavior.
• To disseminate research findings through traditional academic means and a variety of other activities designed to serve the broader community.
• To provide opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students to participate in research activities related to health, leisure and human performance.
• To promote collaboration and interdisciplinary activity with other University faculties and departments and the external community.

The goals of the Institute are facilitated primarily through the activities of the Research Affiliates and Associates. Research Affiliates may hold a primary academic appointment at the University of Manitoba. At present there are 33 Research Affiliates; 18 with a primary appointment in the Faculty of Kinesiology and Recreation Management, with the remaining Affiliates holding primary appointments in the Faculties of Medicine, Education and Management, and the Departments of Psychology and Environment & Geography. Several research affiliates are from other institutions such  as the University of Winnipeg, Pan Am Clinic, and Makerere University. Research Associates are full or part-time researchers with an interest in health, leisure and human performance.  The number of Research Associates varies depending upon the nature of the projects in the Institute. There are presently 4 Professional Affiliates/Associates.
