Brief History of Our Research Institute
In the early 1980's, Dr. Henry Janzen, Dean of our Faculty, worked with Jim Daly to raise money for a new Arena Project at the University of Manitoba. Over time this project grew to include a Field House and was eventually named the Max Bell Centre. Dr. Janzen received approval from Dr. Arnold Naimark, President of the University, to reserve the 2nd and 3rd floor space above the locker room areas, for a Research Institute. Dr. Wendy Dahlgren wrote a proposal for the creation of the 'Institute', which was then accepted by the University Senate
Thus the Sport and Exercise Science Research Institute was established in 1984. Money was raised from all levels of government to complete construction and to furnish and equip laboratories. The Provincial Government stepped up to the plate as the Ministers from three Departments of Sports, Education and Health, established an initial endowment fund, which was later added to by companies like Coca Cola and Great West Life. Dr. John Wade, Dean of Medicine, partnered with our Faculty in promoting and supporting great research at the Institute; this strong partnership still flourishes today.
Dr. Alan Martin was appointed as the first full time Director in 1987. In 1992, the Institute name was changed to the Health, Leisure and Human Performance Research Institute, to better reflect the breadth of research expertise of our Institute Research Affiliates. Under the successive Directorships of Drs. Mark Searle and Mike Mahon, the Institute grew in numbers, research success and community influence.
