Exercise Physiology Laboratory
Activity in the Exercise Physiology Laboratory serves two main purposes:

1. Research: to enable faculty members and graduate students to conduct research that examines the health and functional benefits of physical activity, or investigates the physiological factors related to successful performance in various sports.

2. Service: to provide the necessary expertise, equipment and facilities to assess physical fitness and other factors related to human performance in a range of individuals from high performance athletes to recreational participants. In addition to fitness and lifestyle assessments, researchers and other staff may develop and monitor training programs and assist in the establishment of employee wellness initiatives.

Recent Studies

  • examination of the health benefits of physical activity in older women, with specific reference to risk for coronary heart disease and osteoporosis
  • determination of the relationship between regular exercise and vasomotor changes during menopause
  • examination of the relationship between physical function and lifestyle activities in the elderly
  • investigation of the determinants of health status and health promoting behaviours in various populations including fitness centre members, corporate employees, and individuals with and without lifestyle-related diseases

Facilities

The laboratory is equipped to measure gas exchange variables, including assessment of oxygen uptake, basic cardio-vascular parameters, blood lactate, power output, body density, percent body fat, and to estimate energy expenditure.
