The Faculty of Medicine is committed to supporting our faculty members to achieve their academic and career goals. Career development and performance feedback in the form of regular constructive feedback and development plans, facilitates the professional and academic success of our faculty members. It is also an important standard for medical accreditation and helps to align faculty goals with the goals of our academic centre.
To ensure our faculty members are receiving consistent and transparent performance feedback the Faculty of Medicine has been working with faculty members and academic leaders to draft a Career Development and Performance Feedback Policy and Performance Guidelines. The objective of the policy is to provide regular feedback and career guidance to all our faculty members encouraging an overall culture of support and development within the Faculty of Medicine. The policy is accompanied by draft Performance Guidelines in Teaching, Scholarship and Scholarly Activity (Research), Administration/Service and Clinical Activities.
The performance guidelines are closely aligned with our Faculty of Medicine Promotion and Tenure Guidelines, accreditation standards, the UMFA Collective Agreement, and aims to clearly define the performance expectations in each of these domains. The first drafts of the policy were developed based on a wide range of consultation with faculty members, academic administrators, human resources and University of Manitoba Faculty Association representatives and have been distributed widely and made available for review and feedback on the Academic Affairs website.
On April 4, 2013 the Faculty of Medicine held an Open Forum to discuss the first drafts of the new policy. Thank you to everyone who attended our Open Forum in April and to those who have provided on-going feedback and input in the new Career Development and Performance Feedback policy. Based on your input we have redrafted the policy and related documents. In addition we are working on developing a robust appeals mechanism to accompany the policy in order to ensure that faculty members are protected by a fair and objective appeals process.
The latest draft policy and performance guidelines are listed on the right. The policy proposes an annual performance feedback cycle for GFT faculty members and a biennial performance feedback cycle for faculty with Nil salaried academic appointments. A process that includes UMFA faculty members is being developed in collaboration with the University of Manitoba Faculty Association representatives.
The first phase of implementation will begin in January 2014 including GFT faculty members and faculty members with NIL salaried academic appointments. The second phase of implementation will be in January 2015 and will include improvements based on feedback following the first phase of implementation along with the inclusion of our UMFA faculty members.
Your continued input is important; we want to make sure that we capture the feedback and perspectives of our faculty. We invite you to provide input either anonymously via the Feedback Form or by contacting Dr. Terry Klassen, Associate Dean, Academic, Faculty of Medicine directly. Your feedback will be used to assist us in enhancing the proposed policy and performance guidelines and to ensure they meet the needs of our faculty members.
