Applying for event CME credit
Program Accreditation

The University of Manitoba’s Division of Continuing Professional Development can assign Mainpro-M1 credits (CFPC), Section 1 Maintenance of Certification credits (RCPSC) and, through a reciprocity agreement, AMA PRA category 1 credits (AMA).

It is recommended that activity planners call the Division of CPD before starting work on their program. The nature of the Division’s involvement will depend on the intended target audience and the organization planning the event.

College of Family Physician of Canada Mainpro
The University of Manitoba Division of CPD is approved by the CFPC to assign Mainpro-M1 credits for family physician programming. To be able to assign Mainpro-M1, the Division of CPD must have direct involvement in the development of a program.

Programs planned without the involvement of the Division of CPD must apply for Mainpro-M1 accreditation with Manitoba College of Family Physicians.

Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Maintenance of Certification

The University of Manitoba Division of CPD is approved by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada to assign Maintenance of Certification Section1 credits for specialist programming. Programs designed for specialists may be either co-sponsored or approved by the Division of Continuing Professional Development:

  • In order to qualify for approval, the primary sponsor must be a physician organization, defined by the RCPSC as “ A not-for-profit group of health professionals with a formal governance structure, accountable to and serving, among others, medical specialists through: Continuing professional development; Provision of health care; and/or Research”
  • To qualify for approval, it is not necessary for the Division of CPD to be represented on the planning committee, but it is essential that planners follow and document the criteria for accreditation outlined in the application package.
  • When a program is “approved” ultimate accountability for content, educational and ethical standards lies with the physician organization.

American Medical Association PRA
As the Division of CPD is accredited by the Committee on Accreditation for Continuing Medical Education (CACME), it has reciprocity with the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) in the Unites States of America to award AMA PRA category 1 credits. To be able to assign AMA PRA category 1 credits, the Division of CPD must have direct involvement in the development of the program.

Program Requirements
Specific program requirements are described on the websites of the College of Family Physicians of Canada, Royal College of Physicians of Surgeons of Canada, and the American Medical Association, but in summary:

  •  The planning committee must be representative of the target audience (and not be limited to those presenting the material)
  • The program must be based on some form of assessment of needs of the target audience
  • The program must have learning objectives that address the identified needs
  • At least 25% of the total education time must be devoted to interactive learning
  • The program must be evaluated

The program must meet ethical standards for continuing professional education.

Fees
As a cost-recovery the Division of CPD will levy a fee for the review of applications. Fees do not apply to programs co-developed with the Division of CPD.
