MCCQE1 Exam Prep Resources

It would be prudent to start with familiarizing yourself with the MCCQE format. You may access a demo video of the multiple-choice question (MCQ) component and the clinical decision-making (CDM) component .The MCCQE Part I Online Demo provides a demonstration of how our computer-based examination operates. You will be able to familiarize yourself with the computer-testing environment and learn about each feature before using them in the actual examination. The MCCQE Part I Online Demo includes 28 questions in the MCQ section and six cases in the CDM.

Additionally, you may identify your knowledge gaps using the Objectives for the Qualifying Examination . The Objectives are organized in terms of clinical presentations. Under each clinical presentation is a set of learning objectives that are exactly what you, as an examinee, have to know for any of the Medical Council of Canada examinations.

Study Guides & Books (Available at HSC Bookstore)

Essentials for the Canadian Medical Licensing Examination:Review and Prep for MCCQE Part I (Chowdhury) has a review of key concepts using the MCCQE Examination Objectives as guidelines for developing the text. Includes decision-making trees on clinical presentations and clinical pearls by specialty.

Toronto Notes is a compilation of notes by specialty with a clinical-based focus. There is also a Clinical Handbook available.

First Aid series is based on feedback from recent test-takers. Books are by specialty and offer a review along with mini-cases for oral board practice. For Board Exam prep. Clerkship books with information for  each specialty core competencies and mini-cases. USMLE exam prep and Q&A books

Lange offers specialty Q&A, USMLE exam prep. NB: Lange Case Files are available via the “Toolkit for Clerkship” on NJM website

Kaplan offers USMLE prep books and flashcards, Specialty Board exam prep, Specialty Q&A books,

Blueprints offers review, specialty Q&A, case files, pocket guides,and clinical cases books. The “Blueprints Bundle” is a comprehensive review for board exams as well as USMLE step-specific books.

Case Files include specialty clinical pearls and USMLE-style review questions based on “real” patient scenarios

Public Health and Preventive Medicine in Canada, by Chandrakant P. Shah.: many Community Health questions on the exam may be answered by reading this book.

USMLEasy.com is a 8000+ question database for the USMLE Step 1, Step 2CK and Step 3 which simulates the real USMLE as well as providing targeted remeditations and performance profiles. For more information, visit their website. CFMS members receive a discount.

Online tests/Websites

The Medical Council of Canada (MCC) offers the Self Administered Qualifying Examination Part I (SAE – QEI), an online, 96 multiple-choice question practice .Multiple forms are available at any given time. The cost of each Self Administered Examination is $60 CAD, payable online by credit card (Visa or MasterCard only). SAE - QEI does not contain a clinical decision making component, it only covers the MCQ.

The University of Utah School of Medicine has a list of websites useful for the USMLE that may help with the MCCQE1 as well

The CFMS Textbook Review Committee is made up of medical students around Canada. Their job is to reviews books from publishers and endorses books which they feel are useful for Canadian medical students.

Preparation courses

MCCQE I exam preparation courses are offered by various groups across the country. The content and format varies greatly from one course to the next. None of these courses can review all of the content that you would have learned in the course of a four year medical program.  The University of Manitoba Office of CME offers a half-day course that provides participants with an overview of the MCCQE1 exam, MCQ and Short Answer question formats and tips on how to prepare for the exam.
