ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS & TUITION / FEE INFORMATION

The MPAS admission requirements follow those described on the Faculty of Graduate Studies minimum requirements web page. 

In order to be eligible to apply for this Program, you must:

  • Be a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident of Canada.
  • Be a graduate of or enrolled in the final year of a four year Bachelor's degree from a college or university recognized by the University of Manitoba* (see note below).  Please see the FAQ page for more information on the degree requirement. 
  • Have achieved a minimum GPA of 3.0 in the most recent 60 credit hours of study (full time or part time study). 
  • Provide a total of 3 letters of recommendation (2 letters as required by the Faculty of Graduate Studies, plus 1 additional letter as required by the PAEP).   One of the referees must be your current/most recent employer, supervisor, student advisor, or professor.  The referees must be able to provide information regarding your character, communication skills, professionalism, and suitability for practice as a Physician Assistant. Please follow instructions on the On-Line application form for Reference Letter submission.  There is no format or specific “reference form” for these letters, the referee may write it as they choose. 
  • Have successfully completed or be enrolled in undergraduate level courses (three credit hours each) in Human Anatomy, Human Physiology and Biochemistry if they were not included in the Bachelor's degree.* (see note below).

    The acceptable course combinations that would meet our Biochemistry requirement are University of Manitoba courses Biochemistry 2360 and 2370. Reading these courses descriptions will help you determine if you have covered these topics in the course you have taken or will take.  

    The Biochemistry courses you take must be at a University degree level -  introductory and first year courses are NOT accepted and a minimum grade of C must be achieved.  Online Biochemistry courses will not be accepted, with the exception of SCS 2472:  Biochemistry with a medical perspective offered by the University of Toronto.

*    If you are enrolled in the final year of a Bachelor's degree and/or any of the 3 required courses (Human Anatomy, Human Physiology and Biochemistry) at the time of application to this Program:
  • You are still required to submit official transcripts by the application deadline of November 30th for the courses you have completed at time of application;

  • Final official transcripts of the Bachelor's Degree and/or required courses must be sent immediately upon completion of the degree or courses and must be received no later than the last working day in May of the intake year you have applied for (i.e. if you are applying for September 2013 intake, final official transcripts must be received by May 31, 2013).

Microbiology and Psychology are asset courses and would enhance your application.

All students in the MPAS must possess the cognitive, communication, sensory, motor, and social skills necessary to interview, examine, and counsel patients. Students are also expected to competently complete certain technical procedures in a reasonable time while simultaneously ensuring patient safety. he On-line Faculty of Graduate Studies Application through Apply Yourself, MPAS Supplementary Application and Adult Criminal Records and Child Abuse Registry Self Declaration Form (both included in the On-Line Application).  Please read the instructions on the Self Declaration Form carefully;  applicants are NOT required to obtain these checks at time of application, only the Self Declaration Form is required. 

TUITION, BOOKS, FEES, CLINICAL ROTATION COST
Tuition for Canadian Residents effective August 2010 is $14,700 per year, total $29,400.  The cost of textbooks during the first year of study is approximately $1700.00 (2012/2013), and is subject to change each year.  The cost for medical equipment during the clinical training year is up to $750.00.  Students are also responsible for their transportation costs related to clinical study.  This cost will vary depending on clinical training opportunities each year.

The following student fees are also applicable:  Library Fee, Registration Fee, Student Organization Fees, Student Services Fees, and Tech Fee.  PAEP students are also eligible to participate in the UMSU Health and Dental plan.  The cost of these fees can be found on the

COLLEGE OF PHYSICIANS AND SURGEONS OF MANITOBA EDUCATIONAL REGISTER
Students who are accepted into the MPAS must be registered with the
College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba on the Educational Register, Prequalification Physician Assistant Student for the duration of the Program.  The registration cost is $350.00 per year.
