Summer Early Exposure
The Summer Early Exposure Program is intended for Year I and Year II (pre-clerkship) medical students providing opportunity to experience/explore a clinical setting. University of Manitoba students will recieve credit in the MSPR (Medical Student Performance Report) for each successfully registered and completed Summer Early Exposure.

GENERAL INFORMATION
(for University of Manitoba Students and Visiting Students)

University of Manitoba and Visiting students must adhere to the Summer Early Exposure Policy and Procedures listed below. A listing of recommended exposure experiences are also provided as a guidance.

The Summer Early Exposure Program commences after Convocation (University of Manitoba) approximately May 15-August 15 each summer.  The application form is available for completion in early May and application deadline for ALL Summer Early Exposures is June 30th (annually).

UNIVERSITY of MANITOBA STUDENTS
University of Manitoba students must submit the Summer Early Exposure form (and any accompanying documents) two weeks prior to the proposed early exposure experience.

Students must meet the following requirements to be eligible to participate in the Summer Early Exposure Program:

  1. Each exposure must be a minimum of ten (10) full days [eight (8) hour shifts]; days do NOT need to be consecutive but may be spread out throughout the summer
  2. One preceptor/supervisor responsible to oversee the experience (student is responsible to secure a suitable supervisor) 
  3. Each exposure must be scheduled with department once preceptor has been identified (student is responsible to secure specific dates from dept. scheduling personnel)
  4. Must obtain pre-approval of the completed application by UGME Office - Faculty of Medicine (one for each planned experience)
  5. Must be registered as a student participating in the Summer Early Exposure Program by UGME Office - Faculty Medicine
  6. University of Manitoba registration fee must be paid in full through Aurora Student account or Cashiers Office (prior to participation on the ward/clinic)
  7. Student must ensure tosubmit the Supervisors Student Evaluation form AND Student's Exposure Experience form after exposure is completed immediately following each exposure

Out-of-Province/Overseas Summer Early Exposure Information (for University of Manitoba Students)
The below listed documents may be required when planning/arranging  for an out-of-province/overseas summer early exposure. Information for each of these letters may be included in one letter or as seperate letters; please be specific when requesting. 
Any one of theses letters may be obtained by making a request to Ms. Jeanine Neish, UGME Evaluations via email at jeanine.neish@med.umanitoba.ca or by completing a request form that can be obtained at reception in 260 Brodie.

  • Letter of Student in Good Standing
  • Confirmation of Enrolment letter 
  • Assurance of Liability/Malpractice Insurance coverage

Students must also submit the following required documents if applying for an out-of-province/overseas exposure:

Additional information for arranging out-of-province/overseas exposures:

  • Registration fee for Summer Early Exposure at UofM must be paid prior to commencing the arranged out-of-province/overseas exposure.
  • Canadian Provincial Guidelines/Procedures for out of province pre-clerkship students interested in early clinical exposures
  • CPS- BC Procedures required to arrange early clinical exposures
  • VISITING PRE-CLERKSHIP STUDENTS APPLYNG FOR A SUMMER EARLY EXPOSURE (at the University of Manitoba)
