                              What are my residency options?

R1 (direct entry) residency programs are those residency programs that you apply to while in your final year of medical school. CaRMS provides a list of all R1 residency spots.

Of the full list of R1 residency spots, not all residency programs are offered at the University of Manitoba. (For instance, the U of M does not currently offer residency programs in dermatology, opthalmology or neuropathology.) Please see the Specialties at the U of M page for a list of residency programs offered at the University of Manitoba.

Once you have begun your chosen residency program, those trainees in Internal Medicine, Pediatrics and Family Medicine have further options.

R4 Medicine Subspecialty programs (open to R3 Internal Medicine Residents): Cardiology, Clinical Immunology + Allergy, Clinical Pharmacology, Critical Care Medicine, Endocrinology + Metabolism, Gastroenterology, Geriatric Medicine, Hematology, General Internal Medicine, Infectious Diseases, Nephrology, Occupational Medicine, Palliative Medicine (may be taken through Internal Medicine or Family Medicine), Medical Oncology, Respirology, Rheumatology.

Pediatric Subspecialty Match (open to R2 or R3 Peds Residents): Adolescent Medicine, Pediatric Cardiology, Pediatric Clinical Immunology + Allergy, Clinical Pharmacology, Pediatric Critical Care, Developmental Pediatrics, Pediatric Emergency Medicine, Pediatric Endocrinology + Metabolism, Pediatric Gastroenterology, Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, Pediatric Infectious Diseases, Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine, Pediatric Nephrology, Pediatric Neurology, Pediatric Respirology, Pediatric Rheumatology.

Careers In Medicine - Residency Planning Tool

The AAMC Careers In Medicine website provides a helpful tool for residency planning that allows logged-in users to compare and rank residency programs before submitting rankings to CaRMS. Once you are logged in, click on the "Getting Into Residency" headline in the task bar at the top of the page, then click on "Residency Preference Exercise" in the drop-down menu. The exercise consists of creating a profile, which includes taking a 10 minute questionnaire on the characteristics you desire in a residency program. After you have created a preference profile, you can search for and rate programs. Since this is an American site, you will need to click on "can't find a program" in order to manually enter the names of the Canadian programs. Once you have a list compiled of the residency programs in which you are interested, you may rate them in a survey style according to your preferences from the initial questionnaire. Once you have done this, you are able to see how the programs compare to each other, both in an overall satisfaction score and at the specific points at which they differ.

The Canadian Medical Association has information regarding CaRMS travel costs and how to save money while travelling to residency interviews.
