Anesthesia Clinical Assistant Program

The Anesthesia Clinical Assistant Program (ACAP) within the University of Manitoba, Department of Anesthesia represents a collaborative effort combining the resources of the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority with academic involvement of Faculty in the Department of Anesthesia under the guidance of The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba, the licensing authority for this and other physician clinical assistant programs.

ACAP is a one-year training program designed to prepare individuals with prior experience in Nursing, Respiratory Therapy, International Medical Graduates, and Physician Assistants to assume non-physician, anesthesia care team professional roles in Winnipeg.

ACAP honors the position of the Canadian Anesthesiologists’ Society which is, “Anesthesiology in Canada is practiced by specially trained physicians” and “Anesthesia assistants are specially trained healthcare professionals who assist in the delivery of anesthetic care under the direction and supervision of Anesthesiologists”.

QUALIFICATIONS

- Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) or Registered Nurse (RN) licensed to practice in Manitoba, or previously practicing (in country of origin) International Medical Graduate (IMG) or Physician Assistant (PA) with recent experience in Anesthesia/Emergency/Critical Care, graduated from a recognized and accredited university/college acceptable to the CPSM.

- Must have two years of critical care or anesthesia-related operating room experience within the past 5 years.

- Excellent command of English language medical terminology.

- Eligible for registration with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba as an Anesthesia Clinical Assistant.

- Certification in Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) preferred.
