Fellowship - Obstetrical
The University of Manitoba, Department of Anesthesia & Perioperative Medicine is pleased to announce the availability of a 12 month clinical fellowship in Obstetrical Anesthesia. Each year, the Fellowship Program will accommodate two successful candidates.

The Obstetrical Anesthesia Fellowship places emphasis on clinical practice, through the acquisition of knowledge and clinical exposure, educational/teaching skills, leadership and managerial skills.

Obstetrical Anesthesia is provided at the two tertiary care facilities in Winnipeg; the Health Sciences Centre and St. Boniface General Hospital. Each of the facilities provides obstetrical anesthesia services to approximately 5,000 parturients per year.

The two tertiary care facilities provide care to both low and high risk obstetrical patients. The fellowship candidate(s) will be exposed to a wide variety of clinical experiences including: a cesarean section, an active acute pain service, significant exposure to regional analgesia and anesthesia, advance consultation for high risk parturients and assisted medical management of the high risk patient in hospital. As well, the fellow will gain clinical experience and exposure to: lumbar epidural ultrasound, the primary care of the newborn, and fetal/maternal assessment in conjunction with the Department of Obstetrics.

A clinical week will consist of two days of obstetrical anesthesia, two days of surgical anesthesia and one day of independent study. The curriculum has been designed for the two days/week obstetrical component to gain a diverse exposure to clinical scenarios as well as acquisition of knowledge through multiple processes. The independent study day will also include specific projects designed to assist the fellow to meet the specific goals and objectives of the fellowship.

The fellow is actively encouraged to participate in various research endeavors including: a course study in research statistics, departmental research symposiums, and research in progress discussion groups. The fellow will have the opportunity to participate in the obstetrical anesthesia simulation as a teaching tool for medical students, residents, and staff.

In house on call commitments will be minimal, though the fellow is expected to attend to high risk cases of significant educational value at the discretion of the attending anesthetist.
The applicant must have a license to practice Anesthesia in the Province of Manitoba or be eligible to obtain a license in Manitoba.
The applicant will submit an application to the program consisting of:
             • A letter of intent to apply
