The Department of Anesthesia, University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Health Sciences Centre site is accepting applications for candidates interested in Fellowship training in Acute/Chronic Pain Management and Regional Anesthesia.
The Pain Management Centre is an active and dynamic unit interested in the care of adult and pediatric patients suffering from acute and chronic pain. The Centre is the major referral unit for approximately two million people and reviews ~700-800 new referrals each year providing fellows with experience to a broad range of pain conditions including cancer related pain and a variety of neuropathic pain syndromes. Fellows will be part of a multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of the chronic pain patient with support from nursing, physiotherapy, psychology, physical medicine and numerous surgical disciplines. Successful candidates will learn interventional pain management techniques including fluoroscopic techniques, spinal stimulators, and intrathecal pumps.
The Anesthesia Department at the University of Manitoba is a centre with expertise in Regional Anesthesia techniques. Several clinicians have in-depth knowledge and experience in the use of ultrasound in the delivery of regional anesthesia. Fellows will have an opportunity to learn this and other regional techniques during their training.
The Acute Pain Service receives approximately 2000 referrals annually providing care to a broad range of patients. The APS follows postoperative in-patients receiving a broad variety of analgesic techniques including epidural and neural sheath catheters. The Health Sciences Centre is a tertiary care trauma centre providing fellows with exposure to the management of patients with complex acute pain problems including spinal cord injuries, and burns.
The core curriculum allows for fellows to have exposure in a multitude of disciplines over a 13 period rotation including:
• six periods of Chronic Pain Management
• two periods of Acute Pain Management
• two periods of Regional Anesthesia
• one period of Palliative Care
• one period of either Spine surgery or Neurology
• one period vacation
The fellowship offers an academic day with lectures on key topics in Pain Management. As well the department offers a separate case- based review of topics in Acute and Chronic Pain Management. Journal club and bimonthly rounds review the current pertinent literature in Pain Management.
The fellowship offers opportunity and support to attend CME programs such as the ISIS interventional pain programs and ultrasound assisted regional anesthesia seminars. As well, fellows are encouraged to attend annual pain society meetings. Research opportunities exist in acute and chronic pain management as well as regional anesthesia.
