The Health Sciences Centre has a dedicated 8‐bed perioperative Surgical Special Care Unit (SSCU). This unit is attended by a group of 10 Anesthesiologists with a special interest in Perioperative medicine. The SSCU group has a diverse anesthesia background in Intensive Care, Perioperative Echocardiography, Acute and Chronic Pain Management and Ultrasound‐guided Regional Anesthesia. This unit is involved in the care of high‐risk surgical patients in the Perioperative period.
The SSCU will form the core clinical component of the fellowship. The fellowship, in addition to the traditional preoperative patient assessment and optimization included in Perioperative Medicine training, will focus on the care of high risk patients through the perioperative period, with the goal of avoiding and managing significant perioperative illness.
The clinical curriculum allows some flexibility with the general 13‐period (4 week periods) rotation organized as follows:
• 4 periods in the SSCU
• 1 period of Anesthesia Consults and Pre‐Anesthetic Clinic
• 2 periods in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit
• 1 period in the Cardiology Echo Laboratory
• 1 period of Cardiac Anesthesia with TEE focus
• 1 period of Surgical Infectious Disease Consultation Service
• 2 elective periods
• 1 period Vacation (may be taken as 4 individual weeks)
The fellowship will offer an academic series covered by the Attending Anesthesiologists in the SSCU, including a broad range of perioperative topics. The fellow will have the opportunity to attend the Critical Care Fellowship academic series as well.
The successful applicant will have an opportunity to gain experience in perioperative echocardiography and ultrasound techniques. They will attend the FOCUS ICU bedside Ultrasound & TTE course (2 day course). They will also have the opportunity to attend the local Ultrasound Guided Regional Anesthesia courses (2 days). They will be some experience with TEE as well. Fellows will attend the Cleveland Clinic Annual Perioperative Medicine Summit in February.
Research opportunities include both ongoing clinical studies and the opportunity to focus on database and outcomes studies.
Finally, the opportunity to teach residents and coordinate the perioperative Anesthesia Consult service will be afforded to the successful candidate.
Salary is competitive and will include approximately one day a week delivering anesthetics.
