Family Practice Anesthesia Program

Residency Training Program

Description

This program is designed to prepare the family physician for rural/northern anesthesia practice through acquisition of the skills and judgement required to provide basic anesthetic service to low risk adult, pediatric and obstetric patients. The program, available as a one year residency within the Department of Family Medicine and provided at a PGY2 level within the Department of Anesthesia, consists of supervised clinical case management, a formal seminar series and other elements. Skills in resuscitation, acute care, emergency medicine and trauma management may also be included.

Entry Qualifications

Candiates

    • Applicants must be graduates of a recognized medical school and have the LMCC, MCCQE or equivalent.
    • Applicants must be eligible for full licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba (CPSM) in order to enter rural practice following the program.
    • Applicants must supply three acceptable references confirming their suitability for acute care medicine.
    • Applicants will be asked to attend a personal interview.

The Department of Anesthesia Admissions Committee and Program Director, in concert with the PGME director of the Department of Family Medicine are responsible for making academic acceptance decisions.

Funding

The program is funded by Manitoba Health with Manitoba’s ORNH being responsible for access to funding.  The family practice anesthesia resident salary is at the PGY3 level and is contingent on a return of service agreement with Manitoba Health, requiring the trainee to return service to a rural or northern area for a time equal to the period of time that was funded. This commitment must be confirmed in writing through a contract in order for resident salary funding to be made available. Details may be obtained from

Clinical Component

Consistent with the CMA policy on Anesthesia training for family physicians, the 12 month program includes 13 four week blocks of training.

  • 6 periods Adult Anesthesia
  • 2 periods Pediatric Anesthesia
  • 1 period Obstetric Anesthesia
  • 1 period Adult Anesthesia, Community Hospital
  • 2 periods Acute Care elective (ICU, CCU, Emergency Medicine)
  • 4 weeks Vacation
With the exception of the Community Hospital rotation (which may be taken at an urban or rural location), all training will be the Health Sciences Centre and St. Boniface Hospital and candidates will be expected to do all types of anesthesia except cardiac cases. In-house call for surgical and obstetric emergencies is an important element of the clinical experience. Increasing level of responsibility and independence by residents over the training year are both encouraged and expected.

Candidates who are returning from rural practice and have satisfactorily and recently completed Acute Care rotations as part of a Family Medicine Residency may be exempt from the two Acute Care elective periods. Other elective rotations may be substituted.

Academic Component

An introductory orientation seminar week is provided in early July. A formal seminar program covering the clinical basis of anesthesia practice is held from September to May on Wednesday mornings. Two formal written examinations (usually in December and June) and an oral examination (usually in June) are held.

The Family Practice Anesthesia Residents participate in all academic activities of the Department including Department rounds, talk rounds, the RCPSC Seminar program (Wednesday mornings) and the Visiting Professor Program. Attendance at Resident Journal club, Research in Progress evenings, and the Resident Research Day are expected. A Clinical Anesthesia Update, focussing on issues of importance to rural hospital anesthetists is held periodically in the spring. This forum for Family Practice Anesthetists and Residents allows CME and forging communication links with colleagues.

Satisfactory performance on both written and oral examinations, and on clinical evaluations is required for Certification. On successful completion of the program, a Certificate will be submitted to the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba indicating the graduate's current competence in adult anesthesia for ASA I, II, and III class patients, including appropriate regional anesthesia, and for pediatric patients above the age of three.

Graduates are encouraged to contact the Program and individual faculty at any time for advice regarding cases or problems they may encounter in practice. They are also encouraged to visit the Department for CME refreshers, and to participate in the Visiting Professor Program and Clinical Update.
