Science teachers are encouraged to contact the BYP Coordinators: byp.coordinator@gmail.com, if they would like to form their own science after-school programs.
The Biomedical Youth Program (BYP) conducts after-school Science Buddies and Mentorship Clubs which are open to all youths interested in science, and are designed to enhance the Manitoba science curriculum. Small groups of 5-10 students come to the Inner-City Science Centre (ICSC) situated at Niji Mahkwa Elementary School, 450 Flora Avenue, Winnipeg; for a one-hour interactive hands-on activity every week after school. Science clubs engage students in creative thinking and problem solving which is accomplished through hands-on science projects on how to maintain a healthy human body. Students are engaged in these activities with the aim of making them fun. The activities are facilitated by volunteers and coordinators, as well as guest speakers from the University of Manitoba. Some examples of activities hosted include forensic toxicology, simulation blood typing, cardiovascular science, basic medical simulation tests, chemistry, molecular biology and microscopy.
Students who participate in the Science Buddies Club are invited to undertake an original research project using the equipment at the ICSC. The BYP’s Mentorship Program pairs students with volunteer mentors from both the Universities of Winnipeg and Manitoba. The BYP’s teacher associates also have the opportunity to mentor their own students using the facilities at the ICSC. Participants of the BYP’s Mentorship Program have presented their work at local science fairs, including the Winnipeg Schools’ Science Fair, Manitoba Schools’ Science Symposium, and Youth Encouraging Sustainability Showcase. Our participants have explored a vast array of fascinating topics, such as the testing of different water bodies in Manitoba, principles in chemical solubility, the efficacy of various anti-microbial agents, and biological implications of bisphenol A from plastic. The Mentorship Program provides students with the opportunity to think critically and creatively, while enjoying the equipment and supportive environment of the ICSC!
