The NMU is recognised nationally and internationally as one of the most successful models of service delivery to remote northern populations. This recognition is a result of the contributions of every person who works within the Unit's structure.

Because of "where" we work many of our employees from support staff to visiting specialists never meet one another, never speak to one another, and might never even know "of" one another. We cannot hold monthly Staff Meetings, an annual picnic, have a golf day, or other events like other organisations.

Since the first issue was distributed in the Fall of 1990 the NMU Newsletter, "the caribou heard" tries to fill that gap — and tries to provide the family feeling Dr. Hildes cultivated when he led the NMU.
