Diabetic Foot Program

In response to the ever growing need of Manitoba's First Nations communities for treatment and prevention of complications of the diabetic foot, the Diabetic Foot Nurse Program was established in 2000.

This community based program is designed to provide continuity of care for people with diabetic foot complications or those at imminent risk of developing complications by means of regular monthly diabetic foot clinics. By providing care to those at high risk, the NMU is able to assist the health care teams (within selected First Nations communities) with the prevention of ulcerations, amputations, and other foot complications that can be so devastating.

Although based from the NMU the Program demonstrates a significant collaboration with the Federal, Provincial, and First Nations Governments to provide comprehensive care to various NMU communities. Through the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority the Program is supported by co-ordination with medical specialists such as: Internal Medicine, Surgery, and Rehab Engineering.
