Parkland Family Medicine Residency Unit was established in 1991, is affiliated with the Dauphin Regional Health Centre, the Dauphin Medical Clinic, the Ste. Rose General Hospital and East Parkland Medical Clinic as well as the Brandon Regional Health Authority and Brandon Medical Clinic. In the beginning, residents in the rural stream would spend their first year based in Winnipeg at one of the urban sites, either KMC or FMC and have a similar experience in their first year to those residents. Over the years, feedback was strong from residents that since they were matched to the rural stream; that they would prefer to spend as much time as possible in the rural area. Therefore, we’ve extended the opportunity for residents to spend the majority of their experience in rural settings. Particularly, we can accommodate 2 to 6 first year residents for family medicine block time. Those residents who do not choose to participate in the family medicine block time in Dauphin; will still be offered the opportunity to spend one week of their Family Medicine Block Time in Dauphin during their first year. In addition, residents are able to complete their final month of obstetrics in a rural setting. Recently, the option has become available for Internal Medicine rotations to be completed in a rural settings as well. Many of the second year rotations are based in Dauphin, which is a city of 8,085 people, approximately 300 km northwest of Winnipeg. Dauphin is an agricultural community that is situated between Duck Mountain Provincial Park and Riding Mountain Provincial Park. Pediatrics and ICU/CCU rotations are completed in Brandon, which is a city of approximately 40,000 people located approximately 185 kms south of Dauphin. Accommodations are provided during core rotations in Brandon. Residents complete 2 months of their Family Medicine time in Ste. Rose du Lac, which is a small town (population 1000) approximately 30 minutes east of Dauphin. Accommodations are also provided at this site.
Many of our educational activities are resident-driven and all committees include resident representation. Our aim is to prepare physicians for a career in rural family medicine and to date we have approximately 85% success rate of residents who train rurally; practicing in a rural area in Canada.
