Description:
This 3 credit hour course aims to introduce up to date, basic immunology concepts at a level suitable for students with little prior exposure to immunology. The lectures are delivered by experts in their related research topics to facilitate more in-depth and research-focused discussion of the basic immunology concepts in class. This half course is routinely taken by beginning immunology trainees, medical residents, as well as trainees enrolled in unrelated graduate programs (ie. biochemistry, medical microbiology, physiology, etc) who wish to have a concise overview of current immunology. NB: WRITTEN PERMISSION FROM THE COURSE CO-ORDINATOR IS REQUIRED BEFORE YOU CAN REGISTER.
General Information:
While there is no assigned text book, you may wish to purchase Basic Immunology: Functions and Disorders of the Immune System by Abul K. Abbas and Andrew H. Lichtman (2010) as a resource. Copies can be purchased from the university bookstore or via the internet. Most professors will put a password protected copy of their PowerPoint lecture presentations on this site. (See link below the Class Schedule.) The password will be distributed at the first class.
Evaluation:
| Midterm examination | 25% |
| Final examination | 75% |
| TOTAL | 100% |
A midterm examination, worth 25% of the final grade, will be delivered on October 17, 2013. It will consist of short answer questions on material up to and including lectures 1-8 (September 9 - October 3, 2013). A final exam, on the second half of the course, will be held December 5, 2013. It is worth 75% of the final grade, and will be made up of short essay questions. The number of questions set by any one examiner will be roughly proportional to the number of lectures taught.
