Subspecialty Program Information - Critical Care

The section of critical care medicine at the university of Manitoba provides clinical services for Manitoba, northwestern Ontario and Nunavut through the ICUs of Health Sciences Centre, the St. Boniface Hospital and the community hospitals in Winnipeg. The section also provides critical care education for medical students, residents and fellows and performs clinical and basic research into sepsis, life-threatening infection including ventilator associated pneumonias, shock resuscitation, resource utilization, quality improvement and sedation.

The clinical program involves over 25 faculty members at 6 hospitals encompassing 4 tertiary care and 4 community ICUs. Included are separate Medical and Surgical/Trauma ICUs at Health Sciences Centre and a mixed Medical-Surgical and a Cardiovascular ICU at St. Boniface Hospital. Intensive care units within the city possess advanced support capability including standard mechanical ventilation (Approx. 75 beds), continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) and Extra-Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO). Approximately 5000 patients are admitted to the ICUs in Winnipeg annually.
