Research Support
Postgraduate trainees in the Department of Medicine, including those in the Core Internal Medicine Training Program as well as subspecialty resident, are strongly encouraged to participate in the research activities of the Department, with a view to enriching the training experience and also to developing interest in specific areas of academic internal medicine to be pursued through further training. Participation in research is actively promoted by the Department in the following ways:
  • Subspecialty Research Programs
    All of the major subspecialty training programs in the Department incorporate in their respective training programs a commitment to providing research experience to trainees through participation in the ongoing research programs of section members.

  • Research Opportunities for Core Internal Medicine Residents
    Proposals for research projects suitable for core internal medicine resident participation are solicited from all Departmental Faculty members on a yearly basis, and a catalogue of such proposals is maintained, to permit residents to select projects in which they might be interested. Guidelines for these proposals include the following:
    • They are not yet fully developed, so as to permit resident involvement in this part of the project;
    • The project should not require more than 2 years to complete; The project will be "do-able" using the time generally available to core residents; i.e. intermittent bursts of activity as other responsibilities permit, together with one or two 4 week elective periods;
    • Projects will be in an area of both interest and expertise of the Faculty member, who will undertake to be closely involved with the project and to provide the supervision necessary to permit the resident to complete the project.
  • Resident Research Day
    The Department sponsors a Resident Research Day, usually in May of each academic year, at which both subspecialty and core residents are given the opportunity to present the results of their research efforts. First and second place cash prizes are awarded in two categories, Clinical Investigation and Case Reports.  Awards are presented at the Resident Research Day Awards' Dinner.
