A qualitative analysis of the professional portfolio in Resident Assessment
Meaningful resident assessment, formative and summative, is both our mandate and our responsibility. Many validated tools have been developed which measure competencies in the "Medical Expert" domain.  However, assessment of the "Intrinsic" competencies, such as schoarship and professionalism remains problematic.  Professional portfolios have been propsed as an effective means to teach and evaluate self-assessment, promote reflective practice and support continuing professional development.  The professional portfolio is also seen as a means of bridging between educational environments, thus facilitating transition from residency to independent practice.
