Survivors Teaching Students
The Winners Walk of Hope is Turning UP the Volume! on ovarian cancer

In support of our “Survivors Teaching Students” medical education program we would like to announce that September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness month. The Ovarian Cancer Survivors education session is presented to our 3rd year medical students during their Obstetrics and Gynecology rotation. It is facilitated by 3 knowledgeable survivors who volunteer to share their experiences with the diagnosis of ovarian cancer. In addition to learning about the signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer, the session encompasses the psychosocial aspects and the post-treatment trajectory. The response from our medical students has been extremely positive and in honour of our survivor teachers we encourage you to support the Ovarian Cancer “Winners Walk of Hope, to be held on Sunday, September 8, 2013 at 9:00 am.

Key Message

Facts about ovarian cancer in Canada

  1. Approximately 2,500 women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer every year – that is one in 70 women in Canada;
  2. Ovarian cancer is the most fatal gynecologic cancer largely because there is no early detection test;
  3. Approximately 1,700 Canadian women succumb to this disease every year because the symptoms of ovarian cancer are often vague, and diagnosis is usually made in its later stages when a cure is less likely.
  4. If ovarian cancer is found early and treated, the five-year survival rate is as high as  90%
