Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships 2011

University of Manitoba graduate students Nicole Lovat (pharmacology and therapeutics) and Craig Milligan (civil engineering) have won Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (CGS). The CGS is Canada’s top graduate research award and it honours trailblazing student researchers whose work will significantly boost Canada’s economy, environment, and quality of life.

Nicole, a medical student in the MD/PhD program in the Faculty of Medicine, is examining ways to minimize the risks associated with the pre-diabetic state experienced during pregnancy. Pre-diabetes during pregnancy occurs naturally and it can progress to diabetes. Nicole’s pioneering work is testing how well a cocktail of antioxidants treat this condition.   Read more.
