How To Do A Candidacy Exam
This is a pass/fail oral examination consisting of a multi disciplinary evaluation of:
  1. The student’s in-depth knowledge in the particular research area
  2. Knowledge, at a general level, of related areas. This must be completed no later than one year prior to expected graduation date.

The Candidacy Exam will be closed to all except the Examining Committee and interested faculty members. The Examining Committee shall consist of members of the Student’s Advisory Committee and the Graduate Program Committee. The student will be questioned orally for 1 - 1.5 hours, covering in depth the student’s area of research and at a more general level, areas related to it.

  • The Student should make up a notice stating the date, time and place of the Candidacy Exam and this notice MUST be sent to the General Office AT LEAST 2 weeks prior to the planned date of the presentation.
  • The General Office will arrange for a member of the Graduate Program Committee to act as chairperson of the Candidacy Exam.
  • The Student must confirm with the General Office that the date has been confirmed with a Chairperson.

Please note that if the time frame outlined above is not met, the Candidacy Exam may have to be re-scheduled!

The area or areas of Physiology to be covered in the exam will be determined by the student’s Advisory Committee in council with the student. Other members of the Faculty may question the student as well.

The Examining Committee shall inform the student of its finding immediately following its deliberations.

A student who fails to perform satisfactorily on the oral examination will be informed of this fact and will be allowed to make a secnd attempt at a time not less than 3 months and not more than 6 months following the first attempt.

The student may elect a written rather than an oral format during the second attempt. A student who fails on the second attempt will be required to withdraw from the program.
