Submitting Your Thesis

The Student is expected to provide the Department with a bound copy of their thesis.

The thesis must constitute knowledge in the student’s major field of study and must be of sufficient merit to be, in the judgment of the examiners, acceptable for publication. Inclusion of published or submitted papers within the thesis is allowed. In this case the thesis must comply with the “Guidelines for Thesis Format - Published Manuscripts” in the University of Manitoba, Faculty of Graduate Studies Thesis Guidelines.

  • The PhD student must deliver enough unbound copies of the thesis for all he members of the examining committee. MSc students may distribute their thesis directly to the examining committee.
  • The Student also needs to submit a signed “PhD Thesis Title & Appointment of Examiners” form with the thesis for distribution. (Available from the General office).
  • The Faculty of Graduate Studies will distribute the PhD thesis copies to all the members of the examining committee.
  • The examiners must submit their reports on the thesis within one month of receipt of the thesis, giving their evaluations of the thesis and, if appropriate, suggesting revisions. Copies of all reports should be sent to the Department Head who will forward them to the Dean of Graduate Studies, who will then determine whether the student may advance to the final oral examination.
  • The Faculty of Graduate Studies arranges the time and place of the oral examination. These arrangements must be confirmed by the Faculty of Graduate Studies, which will circulate an announcement of the oral exam.
  • The Student must submit the exact title of the thesis, an abstract of the thesis, full introduction, and conclusions must be included (not more than 600 words). [Regulations Governing the PhD Program are written in the University of Manitoba General Calendar] to the Faculty of Graduate Studies at least 1 week prior to the Oral Examination.
  • Two unbound copies of the FINAL version of the thesis are submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies once all revisions are completed.

The Student is expected to provide the Department with a bound copy of their thesis. Please note that the Department does not pay for the binding of theses.
