Program Overview

The adult forensic psychiatry program based at the Health Sciences Centre, is a multidisciplinary clinical program which includes inpatient, outpatient, community based and correctional facility components as well as a Mental Health Court operating as a joint venture between Manitoba Justice and Health.  The program provides court ordered assessments for fitness and criminal responsibility, consultations to Probation Services and disposition assessments for the Criminal Code Board of Review.  A full range of treatment services are also provided for incarcerated, accused and convicted offenders, as well as individuals found Not Criminally Responsible and Unfit.

The inpatient and outpatient components are located at the PsycHealth Centre on the PX3 wing. The medium secure inpatient unit consists of 15 beds.  The Mental Health Court is based in the community and includes a Forensic Assertive Community Treatment (FACT) Team.  Regular clinics are conducted at the Winnipeg Remand Centre, Headingley Correctional Institution and The Jail for Women.  Consultation psychiatric services are also provided at Stony Mountain Institution, a medium security penitentiary operated by Correctional Services of Canada.

The service provides educational experiences for several disciplines including medical students and psychiatric residents, nursing, psychology, social work and occupational therapy. Advanced training in Forensic Psychiatry and a Fellowship in Forensic Psychology are available.  Research activity is encouraged in the faculty and students of this program.

The program operates in affiliation with the Community Mental Health Forensic Specialist Program operated by the WRHA, the Forensic Behavioural Management Clinic, a private practice sexual offender treatment program, United Church Half-way Houses Inc., The Winnipeg Parole Office (Correctional Services of Canada), and the Long Term Forensic Program operated by the Selkirk Mental Health Centre.
