Elective Program
Why should I do an elective in Radiology?

Radiology is a key component in the provision of medical care to patients currently.  The exposure to radiology for medical students during medical school and during clerkship can be very poor.  We encourage all medical students to improve their understanding of the role of diagnostic imaging in patient care, as well as improving their own ability to interpret basic imaging studies.  If a student is interested in pursuing a career in Radiology, an elective is strongly recommended.

Electives

We offer electives that are 2 to 4 weeks in duration.  Electives can be organized between any of the three main teaching centers: Health Sciences Centre, St. Boniface General Hospital, or Children's Hospital.  Additional electives can be arranged in the community Hospitals in Winnipeg, as well as in rural Manitoba.

Electives are on a first-come, first-served basis, but we will try to accommodate as many students as possible.

Some of the Imaging modalities that Medical students are exposed to are:

  • Plain Radiography
  • Computed Tomography
  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging
  • Ultrasound
  • Angiography
  • Mammography
  • Nuclear Medicine

Some of the areas that electives can be performed in are:

  • Abdominal Imaging
  • Chest Imaging
  • Neuro Imaging
  • Angiography
  • General Radiology
  • Ultrasound
  • Pediatrics
  • Nuclear Medicine

Unless otherwise requested, students are rotated through most of these areas. To arrange electives please contact Jennifer Iskierski at 787-1328 or jiskierski@hsc.mb.ca
