Helmut Unruh, MD, FRCSC, FACS

Dr. Helmut Unruh joined the Department of Surgery in 1985.  He is a Full Professor and Head of the Section of Thoracic Surgery.  He is also the Director of Surgical Research at the University of Manitoba and Director of the Manitoba Lung Transplant Program.

Dr. Unruh completed his medical training and General Surgery residency at the University of Manitoba.  He then completed his training in Thoracic Surgery at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital in Exeter, England and McGill University in 1984. Dr. Unruh attained his Special Competence Certificate in Thoracic Surgery with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1985.

Dr. Unruh’s areas of interest include esophageal surgery, lung cancer surgery, lung transplantation, and minimally invasive thoracic surgery.
