The eXperimental Improv Ensemble is an interdisciplinary performance group.

Activities of the ensemble vary widely, ranging from live soundtrack performance to the mounting of media art installations. The XIE is dedicated to fostering interdisciplinary collaboration with partners both on and off campus. Recent academic collaborations include projects with Architecture, Computer Science, Sculpture, and Electrical Engineering.
The XIE performs approximately six times per year, typically including Faculty of Music recitals, Jamming the Dragon (see below), and a host of special projects.

One evening per term, the XIE hosts an open stage for improvised experimental music in Winnipeg’s lively Exchange District. These events feature members of the XIE as well as special guests and members of the local improv community. Admission is typically free with charitable donation.

The XIE is open to all University of Manitoba students, at the discretion of the director.
