How to Participate in Recitals and Masterclasses
Welcome or welcome back – as the case may be! We are absolutely delighted to know that you will be with us in 2013-2014. Our excellent teachers, and our prolific array of recital and masterclass opportunities, are what constitute the program. Coupled with the fact the Marcel A. Desautels Faculty of Music itself is expanding by leaps and bounds, both in breadth and depth, makes this an exciting place to be, with the promise of many such years to come.
Here is how recitals, masterclasses and other special events work:
Each student may participate in the masterclasses for the discipline (instrument or voice) in which they are registered.
The “Enrichment Program” masterclasses apply to those students who have been accepted into that portion of our offerings through the audition process in early June. The “Regular Program” masterclasses are for all other students. In actual fact, it’s all enrichment (with a small “e”)!
When a student wants to participate in any, or all, of these events, it is important that the teacher be the guide here in terms of repertoire choice and its polishing for the event. To facilitate schedule of these classes, the deadline for my receiving the pertinent information has been set as the Monday two weeks prior to the event.
The pertinent information is as follows:
1. Student’s name
2. Phone number
3. Email address
4. Event name & date (masterclass or recital)
5. Teacher’s name
6. Title and Composer of piece to be played
7. Length of piece in minutes
8. Copy of music for accompanist (if applicable as below)
9. Time preference for recitals only (will be accommodated as possible)
Please send this information to <musprep@umanitoba.ca>
Your teacher may prefer to submit this information directly on your behalf. Please be sure to discuss this with him or her.
For voice masterclasses, we will try to arrange an accompanist, and for those to whom this applies, you will be given more information closer to the event. For recitals, there will be an accompanist available at the 2:00 PM time slot. Prep Studies pays for the accompanist during an event itself, but the modest cost of a rehearsal is between the student and the accompanist. Of course, many choose to make independent arrangements, which is fine! The masterclasses in disciplines other than your own are open for observation to anyone interested.
