Dr. Cohen’s research program is focused on strengthening public health capacity to address and reduce inequities in health using a social justice lens. Research activities have included conducting a scoping review of public health advocacy for health equity; developing a conceptual framework of organizational capacity for public health equity action; developing and testing indicators of health equity work in local public health agencies; conducting an equity-focused health impact assessment of a proposed provincial parenting program; and exploring perceptions of public health nurses on the role of public health agencies in addressing child and family poverty. Dr. Cohen holds a part-time appointment in the Department of Community Health Sciences, Max Rady College of Medicine. In 2013, she received the Award of Merit from the Community Health Nurses of Canada for her contributions to the field of community/public health.
