Help from the Communications Instructor

Welcome to Studies at the Faculty of Nursing

Whether you take one course with us or you are in the process of completing a Nursing degree, I welcome you to studies at the Faculty of Nursing.

As the Communications Instructor, my role is to help you rise to the challenge of writing and communicating effectively in your academic courses and professional nursing roles.

My background is in Education, more specifically in teaching academic writing, English as an Additional Language (EAL) for specific purposes, and communicating across cultural difference.

Each semester, I meet with undergraduate Nursing students in second, third, or fourth year, and Master of Nursing students to provide assistance with academic writing and communication.

More specifically, I can give you free individualized feedback on the:

  • organization of ideas in your paper
  • APA referencing style (in-text citation, referencing, and formatting)
  • sentence structure and grammatical errors
  • punctuation
  • tone or style
  • communication concerns that arise in clinical practice

To set up a 30 or 60 minute appointment, contact me by phone, 474-6353 or e-mail, cosette_taylor@umanitoba.ca. I am available to assist students Monday to Friday between 9:30am and 5pm, but I do not answer e-mail over the weekends. The further in advance you book the appointment, the more likely I will be able to accommodate your request.

When we meet at my office at 495 Helen Glass, bring a printed copy of your latest draft and the instructions to the assignment. Alternatively, bring any necessary documentation from clinical practice such as a Learning Contract.

During the appointment, I will teach you how to improve your writing while reviewing your assignment with you, or I will discuss strategies and possible solutions to communication dilemmas in clinical practice.

If you cannot make the appointment, kindly call in advance to cancel.
