Numerous scholarship and bursary opportunities are available to graduate students. Listed below is a list of some scholarships/bursaries/awards that are available to graduate students. Please note that this is not a exhaustive list. Please check the Faculty of Graduate Studies Funding and Awards page for more awards that are available.

Christine Michalchyshyn Memorial Bursary
In memory of Christine Michalchyshyn, a former student in the Master of Nursing Program and a dedicated nurse, her family and friends established a memorial bursary at the University of Manitoba in 1989.

The bursary is awarded annually to a student who has completed the first year of the Master of Nursing Program. Students are invited to submit a letter of application and the University of Mantioba Bursary application by September 30th and address the following criteria:
• Excellence in scholarship
• Leadership
• Collegiality
• Financial Need

Preference will be given to full-time students; however, part-time students are eligible to apply. The value of this award is approximately $500.00 and will be reviewed annually. Deadline for Applications: September 30th.

Marion Saydak Memorial Scholarship
In memory of Marion Saydak, her husband Alan and their children, Megan and Patrick, have established a scholarship fund at the University of Manitoba. The Manitoba Scholarship and Bursary Initiative have also made a contribution to this fund. Marion received a diploma in Nursing from Winnipeg General Hospital in 1974. Although she worked as a nurse after that time, Marion pursued her love of learning and keen interest in academics by earning a Bachelor of Nursing degree (1985) and her Master of Nursing degree (1991) from the University of Manitoba. Marion's career was long and varied. She held positions at Health Sciences Centre and at St. Boniface Hospital in areas of labor and delivery and maternal and infant care. At the University of Manitoba, Marion held positions as a Research Assistant, Faculty Advisor, and Lecturer. In 1992, she pursued another avenue in her career path, taking on a position with Manitoba Health, where she remained until her passing in 2000. At Manitoba Health, Marion was involved in the areas of palliative care, long term care, and women's health, to name a few. She was the recipient of many awards and honors, including the Canadian Nursing Fellowship, and she was involved in many professional organizations, such as the Canadian Nurses Foundation, Canadian Association for the History of Nursing, and the Faculty of Nursing Alumni Association. The scholarship in Marion's memory, valued at the available annual income from the fund, shall be awarded annually (beginning in the year 2002) to a graduate student who:

1. is enrolled part-time in the Master of Nursing Program;
2. has completed at least 12 credit hours in the program to date;
3. demonstrates leadership within the professional nursing community;
4. has achieved high scholastic standing (minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.5 in the Master of Nursing program);
5. demonstrates a research/clinical/educational interest in the health of cancer patients and in follow up support systems for surviving family members.

Students are invited to submit a letter of application by April 30 to the Associate Dean (Graduate Programs) in the Faculty of Nursing. Deadline for Applications: April 30th annually.

Nancie J. Mauro (nee Tooley) Graduate Scholarship in Oncology Research
An endowment fund has been established at the University of Manitoba in memory of Nancie J. Mauro (nee Tooley). Nancie Tooley was born and raised in Winnipeg. She attended the University of Manitoba, from which she obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1950, she married Arthur Mauro and together, they raised a close family of four children. Nancie always held fast to the belief that one has a duty to give back to society and she lived this motto to the fullest. She was an active volunteer with many organizations, from the junior league in her younger years to her most recent commitment to the Canadian National Institute for the Blind, to which she gave generously of her time by recording books for the blind. She was also always a great support to her husband, Arthur V. Mauro, during his tenure as Chancellor of the University of Manitoba, a position held from 1992-2001. The available annual income for the fund shall support two scholarships of equal value (initially approximately $5000 each). The first scholarships shall be available in the ear 2003. They will be offered to students who:

• Are enrolled full-time in the Faculty of Graduate Studies (Master’s or Ph.D. program) at the University of Manitoba,  specifically either in the Faculty of Nursing or the Faculty of Medicine; or are in the Postgraduate Medical Education Program, either as a resident or as a fellow;
• Have achieved a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.5 (or equivalent) in the graduate and undergraduate programs; 
• Are conducting or have proposed to conduct research in the area of Oncology and have been judged by the selection committee as demonstrating the greatest promise (among the applicants) as researchers in this field.

The recipients of this award may hold it with any other award. Eligible students will be required to submit a letter of application to the Faculty of Graduate Studies. The application letter will provide a summary of the research that the student is conducting or plans to conduct and will outline the relevance of the research to the study of Oncology. The Faculty of Graduate Studies will set the deadline date for applications each year. If there is no qualified student in a given year, this award will NOT be offered to students pursuing research in other areas. In addition, if only one qualified student is selected the award will be valued at half of the available income for the fund (it shall not be doubled to one recipient). In both cases excess income shall be capitalized with the corpus of the fund.
This fund will be administered according to the investment policies and practices currently employed by The University of Manitoba for all other endowment funds.
 
Deadline for Applications: October 17th annually. 

Peter and Dorothy Saydak Memorial Scholarship
In memory of Peter and Dorothy Saydak, their sons, Alan and Richard Saydak, and their families established a scholarship fund at the University of Manitoba in 1995.

The scholarship is awarded annually to a part-time student in the Master of Nursing Program who has completed at least 12 credit hours. Students are invited to submit a letter of Application by April 30th and address the following criteria:

• Demonstration of leadership within the professional community;
• High scholastic standing (minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.5 in the Program); and
• Demonstration of research/clinical interest in the health of seniors and their family support networks.

Deadline for Applications: April 30th annually.

The Child Health Graduate Studentship in Nursing (Formerly The Pat Scorer Studentship in Nursing)
Pat Scorer was the Director of Nursing at Winnipeg Children's hospital for over 20 years. When Children's also had a School of Nursing, she was the Director of the School until she retired in 1985. Ms. Scorer was a leader in Pediatric Nursing who encouraged innovation and initiative in the care of children and families. The Child Health Graduate Studentship fund has been established at the University of Manitoba in honor of Ms. Scorer through equal contributions from the Children's Hospital Foundation and the University's Graduate Fellowship Matching Funds Program. The Child Health Graduate Studentship in Nursing will recognize students who already have practical work experience in Pediatric Nursing and show an interest in continuing to study at the graduate level in this field. This studentship will be valued at $8,000 and will be offered to a student who:

• has worked as a nurse in the area of Pediatric Nursing following completion of an undergraduate nursing degree;
• is enrolled as a full-time student in the Faculty of Graduate Studies, in the Master of Nursing program;
• has achieved a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.5 (or equivalent);
• has submitted the best proposal for a graduate thesis or practicum in the field of Pediatric Nursing, as judged by the selection committee.

Successful applicants are required to acknowledge financial support from the Child Health Graduate Studentship in Nursing in all publications and presentations.

The following information should be included in the application:

• letter with current telephone, address, email address
• thesis or practicum chair and committee members including rank and academic units
• title and short summary of thesis or practicum topic (approximately 500 words)
• thesis or practicum proposal
• future goals relevant to pediatric nursing practice and/or research
• current curriculum vitae
• letter of reference from thesis or practicum chair including comment on: i) scholarly aptitude, ii) quality of the proposed work, iii) future potential contribution to the field
• copy of student's official transcripts (these can be requested from the Graduate Program Office, Faculty of Nursing).

Deadline for Applications: September 15th annually

Murphy Scholarship in Graduate Research in Oncology Nursing
Through a gift from The Murphy Foundation Incorporated and matching funds from the University of Manitoba Graduate Fellowship Matching Fund Program and the Manitoba Scholarship and Bursary Initiative, a fund has been established at The University of Manitoba to support graduate research in the area of Oncology Nursing. Each year, two scholarships, each valued at half of the available annual income on the fund, will be offered to students who:

• Are enrolled as full-time graduate students in the Faculty of Graduate Studies (Master’s or PhD program), either in Nursing or in an interdisciplinary PhD program with a focus on Nursing;
• Have achieved a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 (or equivalent) on all courses completed both in the graduate and undergraduate program;
• Are conducting or are planning to conduct research in the area of Oncology Nursing.

The recipients of this award may hold it with any other award. Eligible students will be required to submit a letter of application to the Faculty of Nursing. The application letter will provide a summary of the research that the student is conducting or plans to conduct and will outline the relevance of the research to the study of Oncology. The Faculty of Nursing will set the deadline date for the applications each year. In years when only one student qualifies for this award, that student will receive an award valued at the available annual income of the fund. If there are no qualified students in a given year, this award will NOT be offered to students pursuing research in other areas of nursing.

Deadline for Applications: April 30th annually.

Women’s Health Research Foundation of Canada Graduate Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to recognize academic excellence. It is given to students who have demonstrated superior intellectual ability and academic accomplishment, and whose research concentration is in some area of women’s health. The scholarship can be awarded to a student in women’s health research in any field of study or in any Faculty or School of The University of Manitoba which offers a program of study leading to a Master’s or PhD.

Eligibility - At the time of application, students must be registered in a graduate program at The University of Manitoba.

• “Registered” includes being accepted by the major department of study, admitted by the Faculty of Graduate Studies, or eligible to register in the Faculty of Graduate Studies.
• A student admitted under the “Provisional Status” may not receive the award during the provisional period.

The Women’s Health Research Foundation of Canada Graduate Scholarship is not tenable with any other scholarship with a value in excess of $19,500.00. The award is valued at $3,000.00.

Term of the Scholarship: The term of the award is normally one year from September 1 of the current year to August 31 of the following year.

Deadline for Applications: April 1 annually.

Kathleen and Winnifred Ruane Fund
With a bequest of $450,000, Kathleen Ruane has established an endowment fund at the University of Manitoba to support Nursing students’ academic and research objectives.

• Kathleen and Winnifred Ruane Nurse Practitioner Scholarships

The annual income from the fund will be used to offer two scholarships, valued at $3,000 each, to graduate students who:

1. are enrolled full-time in the Faculty of Graduate Studies, Master of Nursing program in the Nurse Practitioner stream;
2. have achieved a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.5 (or equivalent) based on the last 45 credit hours of study;
3. meet the selection criteria which may include, but not be limited to:
   • innovative past practices in nursing;
   • sound, innovative ideas for future practices;
   • clear articulation of ideas in writing; and
   • demonstrated leadership skills.

Eligible students will apply for this scholarship on or before the designated deadline date. Applicants will be required to submit a letter of application, including a description of how they meet the selection criteria, a copy of their official transcript, and two letters of reference, one of which should be from a faculty member. Application deadline is April 30.

Mona McLeod Award
The Mona McLeod Award fund has been established at the University of Manitoba in honor of Ms. Mona McLeod. Contributions to the fund have been made by Ms. McLeod’s former students, colleagues and friends. The Manitoba Scholarships and Bursaries Initiative have also made a contribution to this fund. Mona McLeod was distinguished as a professor of nursing at The Faculty of Nursing at the University of Manitoba for over a 20 year period until she retired in 1978. Ms. McLeod was also a leader in public health nursing in Manitoba. Prior to joining the School of Nursing in 1958, she worked as a public health nurse in rural and urban areas of the province. While teaching public health nursing, she conducted research into several areas relevant to public health including the health of aboriginal peoples. She encouraged the development of public health nursing throughout the province and challenged students, practitioners and colleagues to consider the importance of disease prevention and health promotion in the community.

The award in Mona McLeod’s honor will recognize graduate students in any area of specialization in the Master of Nursing program. This award, valued at the available annual income, will be offered each year to a student who:

• Is enrolled as a full-time or part time student in the Faculty of Graduate Studies in the Master of Nursing Program;
• Has achieved a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.5 (or equivalent).

Eligible students will apply for this award on or before the designated deadline date. Applicants will be required to submit a letter with their most current address information, a copy of official transcripts, a statement of career goals on completion of the program, and current curriculum vitae.

Award recipients are required to acknowledge financial support from the Mona McLeod Award in all publications and presentations.
