Information for Newly Admitted Students

Summer, 2013

Dear Student:

Welcome to the Faculty of Nursing, and congratulations on your provisional admission to the Faculty of Nursing. Your admission is conditional on our receipt and your clearance of the non-academic admission requirements by August 1st: Criminal Record Search Certificate, Child Abuse Registry Check, the required immunizations, and CPR certification. Your admission will be revoked if you do not meet the requirements by this deadline.

Enclosures
Enclosed with your provisional acceptance letter is a link to a webpage with a number of documents that require your immediate attention. Please read all of the linked documents upon receipt of this letter, and follow instructions carefully. To ensure that you check out all of the information, I have listed below the documents that are on this webpage and noted the due dates for submission of materials.

  • Self-Declaration Form for criminal record and Child Abuse Registry – due immediately.
  • Non-Academic Admission Requirements: Criminal Record and Child Abuse Registry; Immunization; Criminal Record Search Certificate, including Vulnerable Persons Search; Child Abuse Registry Check; and CPR. Due August 1st but submit earlier. See also below.
  • Letter regarding mask fit testing - book your appointment immediately, as you might have to wait a few weeks for the appointment. Mask size is required prior to starting clinical practice.

Immunization and CPR
These documents are due no later than August 1st. Immunizations must be completed according to Faculty of Nursing requirements. It is recommended that you bring in your immunizations as soon as possible, even if they are not yet complete, in order to have them checked to ensure that you are meeting the requirements.

The requirements have changed slightly this year. Therefore, if you completed your immunizations according to the 2012 Faculty of Nursing requirements, ensure that you print the 2013 form, update your immunizations as necessary for the 2013 requirements, and submit the new form.

Criminal Record Search Certificate and Child Abuse Registry Check
These documents are due no later than August 1st. Students were instructed to order these documents between March 1 and 15th, so if you already have the official documents, please submit them now. Do not hold them until the due date. In the event that there is a problem or you need to obtain new or additional documents, those would also be due by August 1st.

If you ordered the documents between March 1st and 15th but you do not have them yet, please inform the Faculty of Nursing that your official documents are not yet available. Ensure that you keep the receipt or other proof of order that you were given when you ordered the documents. The official documents are still due by August 1st.

Cohort Information
Students will be assigned to cohorts; i.e., groups of students who will be registered in the same Nursing courses and timetables throughout their program. Cohorts give students the opportunity to get to know other Nursing students, and facilitates the Faculty of Nursing with planning rotations in clinical practice courses. Preference will be given to full-time students, and space might be limited for students attending part-time. Further information will be included in the new student guide and given at the on-line information session. Please contact a Nursing Student Advisor if you have questions regarding cohorts after you have completed the on-line information session.

Your cohort assignment will be included with your new student guide and academic summary that will be sent to you by e-mail within a few weeks.

Part-Time Students
If you plan to attend part-time, please book an appointment with a Nursing Student Advisor as soon as possible to discuss your course schedule.

On-Line Information Session
A link to the on-line information session will be sent to you by e-mail and will be available by the beginning of July. The session will take approximately ½ hour and is designed for students to complete prior to registration for courses. Information regarding registration, Faculty of Nursing policies that affect students’ progress in the program, explanation of curriculum, and sequencing of courses will be included in the on-line session.

Mandatory Orientation Sessions
All students admitted to the Faculty of Nursing are required to attend MANDATORY New Student Orientation Sessions to the Faculty of Nursing on August 27, 28 and 29, 2013. More information will be forthcoming in the new student guide, which will be sent to you by e-mail  with your registration cohort, and will also be available on this website. These sessions are in addition to the on-line information session available to new students in July.

I wish you every success in the Nursing program. If you wish to book an appointment with a Nursing Student Advisor, please call 204-474-7452.

Sincerely,

Karen Dempsey
