Manitoba Schools of Nursing

In 1887, the first training school for nurses in Western Canada opened at the Winnipeg General Hospital. Since that time, over twenty Manitoba nursing schools have contributed to Nursing Education in the Province, preparing their students to practice as Graduate or Registered Nurses.

The Heritage Room Working Group directed an important part of its activities towards collecting the histories of these schools. The histories are available for use in the Heritage Room and, as resources permit, will be summarized on this web page. Some schools have maintained comprehensive archives; for others, the records are sparse. It is our hope that providing brief summaries of the histories on our web page will encourage further research and contributions to our knowledge of Nursing Education in Manitoba.
