October
19 - The Lakehead Thunderwolves women’s basketball lost a 90-86
thriller to the Manitoba Bisons Friday night in Dryden, Ontario.
Lakehead is now 2-2 in CIS pre-season play while Manitoba goes to
3-1.
Lakehead
had five players score in double figures; led by Kathryn Verboom
with 19 points and 9 boards, Shannon Vellinga had 15 points, Tasia
McKenna had 14 points, Debra Sandberg had 13 points and 7 assists
to only 1 turnover, and Kendelle Kavanaugh had 10 points and 8 rebounds.
The
Bisons were paced by Tessa Klassen with 18 points and Leigh-Anne
Legal-Young with 16 points.
Head
Coach Jon Kreiner said it was a very exciting game and was happy
with his team’s effort. "Obviously, it was a great game for the
fans in Dryden; a see-saw game with lots of scoring. I thought our
team did a great job of breaking their pressure and getting the
ball inside to our post players and having five players score in
double figures. Our rebounding was good but tomorrow we will have
to work on our defense and stopping some of their scorers and bringing
that score down to the 70-80 point range.”
The
two teams tip off again Saturday afternoon again at Dryden High
School at 1:00 pm CST.
