- The Manitoba Bisons took adavantage of a struggling Winnipeg Wesmen
team and walked out of the Duckworth centre with a 68-49 victory
over the Wesmen in the opening game of the 17th Annual Duckworth
Challenge Thursday night.
Tessa
Klassen and Michele Hynes eached scored a game high 20 points to
lead Manitoba. Caitlin Gooch was the top scorer for Winnipeg finishing
with 12 points followed by Randie Gibson with 10 points.
Manitoba
opened up a 33-21 lead at halftime, a half which saw Winnipeg struggle
from the field only connecting on 27% from the field, including
2-for-11 from three point range.
The
Bisons outscored the Wesmen 19-11 in the third quarter to build
a 52-32 lead after three quarters of play. The Wesmen tried to fight
back in the fourth quarter but the Bison lead was too much to overtake.
Tessa
Klassen was named the Duckworth Challenge MVP for Manitoba, while
Randie Gibson took the MVP honors for Winnipeg.
The
two teams will meet on Saturday night at 6:15 p.m. at the University
of Manitoba.
