November
3 - Fresh off their season opening battle on November 1, where the
visiting Bisons (1-1) took the victory over the University of Winnipeg
Wesmen (1-1) 68-49, the Bisons were looking to make it two-in-a-row
on their cross-town rivals at the Investors Group Athletic Centre
on Saturday night.
The
return match didn’t go as planned for the Herd, as the Wesmen
took game two of the series 86-59.
“This
was a disappointing loss,” said Bison head coach, Pam Danis.
“ a lot of credit goes to the Wesmen though, they’ve
got a great young team, full of talent.”
The first points of the game came off a three-pointer from Bison
co-captain, Michelle Hynes, and the Herd set the tone from there,
retaining possession for much of the quarter. Despite the lack of
ball control, the Wesmen were able to keep the game close, going
up on the Bisons within the final minute of the frame.
The score was 18-15 for Winnipeg at the start of the second. Extending
their lead in the early part of the quarter, the Wesmen played a
solid perimeter game, making several shot from downtown. At the
halfway point in the quarter the Wesmen were beginning to pull away
as the Bisons’ foul troubles started to add up. At the break,
the Bisons were trailing 40-29.
The Wesmen’s Dawna Wright led all players at the break with
13 points, while Lauren Mortier, and Leigh-Anne Legal-young both
had 7 points for the Bisons.
Wright went down with an injury early in the third, after a mix-up
under the glass, and the Bisons took advantage, pulling to within
six quickly. Wright would return to the game shortly thereafter.
After the return of Wright, the Wesmen seemed to pull away just
as quickly as the Bisons tried to come back, leading by 14 points
going into the fourth.
With the score 56-42 going into the final quarter, the Bisons desperately
tried to come back in the game, but Winnipeg was too strong on the
night, leading by as much as 29 points. Late in the game, desperation
moves on the part of the Bisons only resulted in more foul trouble.
Wright finished the game with a total of 22 points leading all players,
and the Wesmen finished the game shooting 54 percent from the field.
Legal-Young was the top Bison with 13 points in the game.
Coach Danis spoke about how the team will prepare for there next
opponent. “ We have the confidence, we just need to execute,”
said Danis. “And that means preparing our execution for the
specific team. That didn’t happen tonight.”
The Bisons will go on a bit of a road trip next week as they try
to stay above .500 in Brandon on November 9 and 10. The Bobcats
will be looking to bounce back from an opening game loss to SFU.
Winnipeg will also be heading out on the road next week. On the
same weekend they will face off against Regina.
