Day Two: 2007 Canada West Championship
Calgary
captures third consecutive women’s title while Saskatchewan earns eighth
title in last nine years for the men at Canada West T&F championship
When all the dust had settled on day two of the 2007 Canada West Track & Field championship at the University of Manitoba’s Max Bell Fieldhouse, two familiar teams were holding the Canada West Championship titles for another season. On the women’s side, the University of Calgary crushed the opposition by doubling their nearest opponent in capturing their third consecutive title with 136 points to Alberta’s 65.5 points. On the men’s side, the University of Saskatchewan won the title with 95 points and extended their winning to eight titles in the last nine seasons.
In one of the most competitive championship for the men’s Canada West team competition in recent memory, Saskatchewan finished with a 25 points cushion over number two Calgary (70) and number three Manitoba (68). Alberta squeezed out second in the women’s team standing by a half-a-point. The Pandas accumulated 65.5 to Saskatchewan third place 65 points. Manitoba was fourth with 60.5 points.
Another Canada West record was broken when Janine Polischuk was first in the women’s triple jump (12.37m). Her 12.37 jump bettered the previous mark set in 2003 by Mandi Tasche (12.08). This was the fourth new Canada West record set during this championship.
The women’s title was never in doubt after day one but Calgary’s Jessica Zelinka continued her push for gold medals on day two. Zelinka added to her three gold medals on day one and took home two more gold medals in the women’s long jump (5.74m) and women’s 60m dash (7.53). Her teammates Holly Ratzlaff won the women’s 600m race (1:33.66) and Heather Sim was first in the women’s 1500m (4:4319). Calgary also won the women’s 4x800m relay and second in the 4x200m.
For
the men, David Berlinic from Saskatchewan won the high jump (1.96m) and
Taylor Petrucha of the Huskies was first in the pole vault (4.82m). Lethbridge’s
Jim Steacy won his second gold medal of the meet with a 16.78m throw in
the shot put and Calgary’s Geoff Kerr added his second medal of the event
with a gold medal in the 1500m race.
Other gold medal performances on day two were Jim Steacy’s sister, Heather from Lethbridge, won the women’s weight throw (15.79m), Alberta winning the women’s 4x200m relay, Victoria in first in the men’s 4x800m relay and Calgary running to first in the men’s 4x200m relay, Ian Jestadt of Regina with a winning triple jump of 14.86m, Trent Ratzlaff of Calgary in first in the men’s 600m and Neville Wright of Alberta in the men’s 60m dash (6.73)

Day One: 2007 Canada West Championship
Calgary’s Zelinka collects three gold medals
Jessica Zelinka of the Calgary Dinos was a one-person record breaker by posting two new Canada West conference records and winning three gold medals on the first day of the 2007 Canada West Track & Field championship at the University of Manitoba’s Max Bell Fieldhouse. She captured three first place finishes with a win in the 60m hurdles (8.24 – beat the 12 year old previous mark by .15), shot put (13.93) and the women’s pentathlon with a score of 4386 points (beat her previous conference record by 60 points).
Zelinka commented after the exciting first day, “It's really exciting to be back here for my last year. I came in with a plan of the things I wanted to do and the scores I wanted to hit, and I hit them all, so I couldn't be happier. I wanted to set the records in the pentathlon and the hurdles and it's done, so now I can look forward to tomorrow.”
With Zelinka assistance, the Calgary Dinos led the women’s team standings after day one with 66 points and Saskatchewan is second with 42. The men’s standings have Saskatchewan in a dog fight with Manitoba for first. The Huskies lead with 37 points to the Bisons’ 36 points. There is only 15 points separating number one position to number six place in the men’s team competition.
Other strong performances included Lethbridge’s Jim Steacy who set another conference record with a weight throw toss of 23.30m, breaking his own record of 22.84 set in 2005. Adrianne Vangool of Saskatchewan won the women’s pole vault with a 4.11 jump. In the women’s 300m, Amonn Nelson, of the University of Calgary won in a time of 39.83. Calgary earned another first place in the women’s 100m when Heather Sim ran to a first with a time of 2:54.05. In the women high jump, Regina’s Janine Polischuk won with a leap of 1.67m. The hosts earned their first gold medal on the track when Georgette Mink won the women’s 3000m in a time of 10:05.66.
On the men’s side, Joshua Simair of Saskatchewan won the 300m (34.68) and Geoff Martinson, University of Victoria, won the 1000m in a time of 2:26.79. In the 3000m race, Calgary’s Geoff Kerr pulled away and won with an 8:24.13 time. Gerod Wiens of Regina took the gold in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.37 while Manitoba’s Nathan Labbe won the long jump in a tough battle with a leap of 7.26m, five better than second place Wade Huber of Regina.
In a usual situation, the men’s pentathlon was tied after five events and Marc Baron of Saskatchewan won by beating Mark Chenery in three of the five disciplines. Both athletes registered 3484 points while third place was decided by two points - Chris Crossley of Saskatchewan in third (3344) and fourth to Nick Clarke of Saskatchewan (3342).
In the two relays of the day, Calgary swept both races. In the men’s 4x400m, with a one second win over Manitoba, the Dinos won with a time of 3:19.57. In the women’s 4x400m, Calgary defeated the Bisons by over four seconds with a 3:51.94 time.
